Best beach umbrella?

Staying for month in Playa. Hoping to avoid costly rentals of umbrellas / chairs every day so looking to buy a beach umbrella when we arrive in Playa Feb 4. ( Got chairs already) . Can anyone recommend a store that has decent sturdy ones? Also I have noticed all kinds of innovative methods being used to anchor the things so they don't blow into the ocean. People fill bags of sand - some screw some kind of anchor in the sand - others use some guy ropes. What method have people found to be best??

After several failures we have concluded that the best umbrellas are made by the same people who make the best beach chairs, Tommy Bahama.
The canopy has a hefty rib structure strongly attached to the center post. The sturdy fabric is reinforced at the points along the perimeter of the fabric which allows flexibility while excess air is allowed to escape from the ventilated second layer. The post is large and the flip down handles with which to drive the screw into the beach are convenient. The case is also very tough and has an adjustable carry strap wide enough to be comfortable on your shoulder and a clear plastic pocket for any receipt or pass you need to display. Used with common sense they will last several seasons and come in the same fabrics as your chairs in case you feel the need to be coordinated. Costco is one place to get them.

Umbrellas are really important to me.

P.S. Just wanted to let you know that my son Sean asked about you and Cliff just yesterday! I told him I hadn't seen you in a few years and he said, "That's too bad, they were really nice people".

Pretty smart for 17, huh?

Hope all is well. If I didn't have to cancel my trip that was planned for 3/1, I would have been able to catch you.

Yesterday Costco/Cancun had 7 foot Tommy Bahama sand anchor beach umbrellas for sale at $459 pesos.
Label says they are rated at SPF100plus.
They looked pretty sturdy to me. The box says " integrated sand anchor secures your umbrella with a simple twist. Wind vented for added stability. Aluminum pole will not rust. Easily installed in sand or grass".

EDIT: So what I have said is in 100% agreement with what CondoPerico says above.

I have those at my house in Florida. They are great for the beach, the bottom of the pole is threaded, a "screw in" with a handle to help turn it. Really anchors it in the beach. And I think I paid a *little* more for them at Costco in Sarasota!! (more like $50, maybe)

$36.57 will just about pay for the buttons on a Tommy Bahama shirt - so for a whole umbrella (no buttons, apparently), it sounds like a pretty good deal.

Best bet, though, might be an eye-catching bikini - that ought to encourage some of those "guy ropes" to stand around and anchor your umbrella.

Use it in the rain. You can probably get 6 people under that umbrella.

Or.....come to Wah Wah Beach Bar where we NEVER charge for beach chairs or umbrellas. No food or drink minimums either. Mike Grabow playing guitar and singing beach music every Monday through Saturday from 1:00 to 4:00. If you do get hungry or thirsty, we serve great food and drink at a fair price. Check us out. We aim to please!

Sam's - but they might be a bit bulky to haul to the beach

Does anyone know if Costco has the Tommy Bahamas beach chairs and umbrellas in stock now?

Does anyone know what a taxi ride from the Cancun bus station to Costco should cost me?

We are looking to purchase a couple of beach chairs and an umbrella. Heard Costco was the place. Has anyone been there recently and seen them?

My wife ordered one of these online. Portable Beach Umbrella. Folding Beach Umbrella For Travel

It worked great. Fit great in to our luggage, didn't take up much room or weight. Screwed in to the beach and stayed up easily. Had a few hooks to hang things. A few poles to adjust the height. $40 US.
