Here is my trip report to Holguin/Gardalavaca.

http://www.playa.info/playa-del-carm...vaca-cuba.html

Varadero is commercialized- but that means 'commercialized' for Cuba- which is of course much less than Cancun. No Starbucks or Gucci in Varadero. But it is basically a strip of AI hotels on a great beach that is pretty much a long sandbar- in that respect it is like Cancun.

We really liked Holguin. Beaches are beautiful- it is quieter than Varadero but not as quiet as Cayo Coco or Cayo Santa Maria. We would go again.

We flew on a direct non-stop charter flight from our home city- so not at all hard to get to for us. However, if you have to fly to Varadero from CUN and then drive, it would be a long ways- it is wayyyy east of there. And it is quite hard to get around these days in Cuba by car, and that province is one of the worst, I hear. I would recommend a direct flight or connect in Varadero and fly there.

If you can swing the Paradisus Rio de Oro, that is the nicest hotel in that area.

We stayed at the Playa de Pesquero, the next nicest, also lovely beaches and surprisingly good food, for Cuba.

A cheaper option on the same gorgeous beach as the Paradisus, Playa Esmeralda, is the Hotel Sol Rio de Luna y Mares.

Great snorkelling there!

I spent a few weeks in Cuba when I was in the US Navy. This was well before Gitmo was known only as a prisoner camp.

The beaches we got to go to were fantastic and the snokeling was the best I have experienced.
