Hi - I'm new! Moving to PDC soon!

Hi Friends,

I'm moving to Playa Del Carmen in April with my husband...We can't wait!
Anyone have any advice on 'must pack' items? Things you just can't get in Mexico?
Thanks, see you guys around soon!

Oh cool! Maybe we'll run into each other, I'll be the girl with the brownish hair and a relaxed look on her face...haha. But yeah, we love Playa too! We kept vacationing there and finally we were like, what are we doing in Oklahoma still? I'm not sure what day we arrive yet, still looking for an apartment.... (well someone is looking for us)
But Good Luck with your move!

That's wonderful! My husband and I are moving there in September and we are so excited. No advice on "must pack" items, but you have certainly selected the right forum to help you!

Having lived there myself, I can tell you itís very different living vs vacationing there but I guess it depends on what stage of life you are in as well. If youíre going there to retire its probably very different than what I did, which was operate a business. I donít live there anymore but there isnít a day that goes by where I donít wish I did and when Iím ready to retire Iíll likely end up back there.

The reality of Playa now is that there is nothing you canít get so I wouldnít worry too much about trying to think of everything in advance. My advice would be to take down as little as possible and get what you need there. First purchase, a really good energy efficient fan because itís way too expensive to run your air conditioner all the time. Unless something has changed recently, electricity is really expensive so watch your usage!

Thanks Michele, Andy and Hiya! Michele I have already emailed you and you were a great help to me! I definitely saved your email to refer back to
And Andy, we are both 29 yrs old with no kids...we hope to end up running a business but we still need to figure it all out, INM's etc. I've already packed one large suitcase full of clothes..and someone told me to bring sheets. ?haha. But thanks for the heads up on electricity costs, looks like we'll be getting a fan!

Apartment Advice

Do you guys think it is reasonable to find a 1 or 2 bedroom apartment for $800US a month in el centro, downtown, za-zil ha or colosseo? Basically something that is walking distance to the center?

Also, if anyone knows of anything - were looking for something in April for a 6 month lease.

Yes, I think that rent is reasonable.

Are you aware of the recent changes to the immigration laws? If you come in on a tourist visa, you will need to leave the country to apply for (what was previously called) your FM3. You can no longer go from a tourist visa to an FM3 in country. There's quite a bit of conversation about it on this forum and others but wanted you to be aware.

Two contacts that we have been working with for rentals are:

Ms. Gabi Waldert of Playa Rentals
Playa del Carmen Rentals & Sales - Long Term Rentals & Real Estate
info at playa-rentals dot com

AND

Ms. Elizabeth Aceves of Renting Playa Del Carmen
Renting Playa del Carmen
elizabeth at rentingplayadelcarmen dot com

I am sure that others on this forum can provide you with additional resources.

Good luck!

Hello!
I am actually currently working with Elizabeth Aceves! She is really great - I just wanted to make sure I wasn't sending her on an impossible task to find a place within that budget. I tried working with Gabi - but she didn't seem to have anything for less than $1100USD.
And yes Rebecca - We are very aware of the changes to the immigration laws. I've been on the phone with different Mexican consulates all week and been reading all the forums about it. blah
