RPDC Trip Report - January 2013

OK, so it's been just over a month since we've been back from our first visit to The Royal. I figured I'd better get this report written!

Day 1
We left Boston and 20 degree temperatures behind and landed in Cancun at around noon, and hit the ATM just outside of Customs. NOTE! Even though I had done my homework, I totally spaced on the fact that the amounts shown on the ATM screen are in pesos, not US. Two ATM withdrawls (and fees) later, we fought our way through the army of timeshare salesmen to the transportation area.
The Olympus people met us and handed us water as we waited about a half hour for our van.
After picking up and dropping off a few other couples on the way, we arrived at The Royal a couple hours later. We were still early for our room, but after checking us in, we were given our bracelets and set free to roam the resort.

We grabbed a couple drinks from Tradewinds and wandered around. The resort is beautiful and well-maintained. I was a bit apprehensive after hearing of all the recent construction, but you couldn't tell that anything had been disturbed in years.

Finally, our room (820) was ready. After seeing our "basic" room, we couldn't imagine who could need more! We unpacked, changed, and headed out to take in more of the property.

We had dinner at Pelicano's, which would become our favorite restaurant on-site, wandered some more, and crashed by 10pm.

Day 2

Breakfast at Spice - my first (but not last) encounter with chilaquiles!
We then passed through the lobby, which was full of crazy midwestern types watching their favorite radio station broadcasting live. The station sponsors a trip to The Royal each year. We met quite a few nice people this week!

We wanted to book our excursions, but the Olympus people weren't at the desk. We returned a while later and they still weren't there, so we booked with the Best Day people instead, much to the chagrin of Abby, who said that he'd tell the Olympus people that we decided not to take any excursions.

Fueled up from breakfast, we ventured out onto 5th, and immediately got sucked in to a jewelry store. We escaped a half hour later and continued our walk. We stopped in at a tiny shop to get cigarettes for the wife (50 pesos - sweet!) and explored the northern few blocks.

We returned to RPDC and changed up to go to the pool. We spent a couple hours people watching and drinking. I was trying to get a good margarita, but after several failed attempts, decided to stick to caipirinhas.

Now Tradewinds is a nice bar, and the swings are cool to hang out on, but it's a good thing that they're so close to the ground. We saw more people fall off the swings than we could count! Come to think of it, we saw a good number of people during the week so hammered that they were tripping over their own feet. One lady needed stitches, another ended up on crutches - it was the walking wounded by the end of the week!

We stopped by the Romance Concierge to book our couple's massage for the next morning, then got ready for dinner at Pescatore, across the street.

Dinner was fantastic, followed by a walk further down 5th. My wife didn't care for the shopkeepers and their sales pitches at first, but soon started giving it back to them, and we walked 5th every night of the week. "Hey, honeymooners! Hey, senorita mas fina! Hey big guy! I was your waiter at The Royal last night!" All good fun. One local in Mayan dress and a mask on his head asked her, "Do you want a picture with my monster?", to which she replied "Do you want a picture with MY monster?" He laughed and walked away.

We stopped at the Lobby Bar before heading to be early again.

Day 2 photos:

Between the Army, State, and Municipal Police, we felt safe the entire trip

Enjoying your TR. I found that the margaritas at the Royal are boring at best, the best is at Luna Blue. Once you've had theirs, you can't drink them elsewhere. Unfortunately, this also applies to when you get home. I've all but given up margaritas because of Luna Blue

We are staying in a swim-up for 2 weeks in may, is the view from the swip-up closest to the beach partially obstructed?
