Thanks! I totally share that sentiment. I'd go back tomorrow if I didn't have a living to make.

I'll try to get back to the narrative in the next day or so

Day VI, Part 2

March 21 was orginally scheduled to be Mexican night on the beach, but at some point during the week, plans were changed and it became Caribbean night instead. This involved a buffet dinner on the beach, with the bar at Trade Winds kept open late in order to serve drinks. Food and service were up to their usual excellent levels.

Before heading out:

A few shots of the Royal's nighttime lighting:

The buffet dinner was excellent, with great food variety, with frequent tray changes to keep the food hot & fresh on a windy evening.

The evening's dessert presentation was a little different......

The show itself was fairly entertaining, featuring dance numbers from various Caribbean countries:

The drinks flowed freely tonight and at this point, Seņorita Mojito became extremely particular about the correct blend of her favourite drink. Any blend not made with aņejo rum, not sweet enough, too sweet, not minty enough, etc. was rejected, with C and I dutifully finishing off those drinks deemed unworthy of the Seņorita's palate.

Then the shooters started coming around (more mini-beers....) with results that were entirely predictable:

The Caribbean party wound down so logically, we decided we needed to stumble over to El Mediterraneo bar for a few more rounds:

Again, my ability to describe the balance of the night in any coherent detail expires at this point..........

Coming up: March 22, our last full day at The Royal

Day VII, Part 1

March 22 was one of those days which seems to find its way into every Mexican vacation: the recovery day. Our overindulgence the night before had run to several more rounds of shooters, consumed in the excellent company of a pair of English ladies who were seasoned world travellers.

We spent the evening calling the tunes, and the next morning, the piper presented his account for our immediate consideration:

S: "I feel awful. Another mojito, por favor:"

After an excellent "recovery brunch" at the much-underrated Tapas & Pintxos, we returned to the beach to further complete the recovery process, accompanied by more mojitos, which soon restored our sense of equilibrium:

S later spotted this young lady walking along the beach and decided that we needed a few more "romantic" photos of ourselves:

And as before, the lure of the surf compelled us into the water:

That about covers the first half of March 22.

Coming up: Lobster Dinner on the Beach and our last night in Playa

Day VII, Part 2

March 22 was Lobster Dinner on the Beach night. When we first arranged this trip with S&C back in September, my wife and I hatched a nefarious plan to surprise our friends with the Romantic Beach Dinner that the RPDC has always offered. This year, the format was changed slightly, so that the Romantic Dinner on the beach, featuring only two or three tables and live music, takes place three or four nights per week, and a steak & lobster dinner with around 20 tables or so is set up on the beach each Friday evening, also with a live band. (Note: both nights involve a per-person surcharge; the cost is considerably lower on the Friday).

Our devious plot was in place by December of last year, and upon arrival at the Royal, we surreptitiously arranged the booking with the Romance Concierge, intending to spring the results of our subterfuge on our friends at dinnertime on Friday.

Unfortunately, our cover was blown when Lopez, one of the beach butlers, came around to our loungers one day early in the week to promote the Friday Lobster dinner. S being a lobster lover, was sold immediately and began to arrange a reservation, thus forcing us to reveal our intentions early.

In spite of losing the element of surprise, we all nonetheless eagerly looked forward to Friday night's dinner, anticipating one of the highlights of this trip. We certainly weren't to be disappointed .

When we returned to our room following the morning on the beach, we snapped this photo of Reyna's towel-art-du-jour:

Then it was time to relax for a bit before getting ready for dinner:

As this was intended to be our most romantic evening of the week, we arranged to eat at separate tables and meet up afterwards:

The dinner itself was outstanding, preceded by a lobster bisque, a salad and appetiser, followed by a decadent chocolate mousse-type dessert. As always, service was impeccable.

The band, Los Invisibles, was quite talented and entertaining, and by the end of the evening, all agreed that this was our best dinner of the week, no mean feat considering the top-notch meals we had had virtually every night:

This was the perfect way to close out a week of outstanding culinary experiences. A drink or two later and we were all ready to say goodnight a little early since we planned to rise early and watch the sunrise from the beach.

Coming up: March 23, Caribbean sunrise in the am, Northwest rainforest in the pm......
