Skipping Playa this year

After visiting last June to find piles of smelly Sargassum on the beach for our 10 day vacation, we decided not to risk it again. We had a good time but we were unable to spend much time in the water or on the beach, the reason we have been to Playa 7 times. We are going to try another location in the Caribbean this summer.

Those days are pretty much over, except for isolated incidents.

We felt the same last year, very disheartened. But alas, the seas have cleared, so we are headed back down on 6/11/16 after finding a non-stop, RT ticket for $332. Leave Nashville at 7:00, on the ground in CUN by 9:45, and hope to be on the beach by noon. Long range forecast is looking good and I have fingers crossed that it stays that way.

Not an issue now.
A patch here and there which is normal, but nothing remotely close to last year.

Yep. We were there in May/June. It showed up unexpectedly while we were there for a few days. Would disappear and come back lightly. Nothing like the year before though.....still we saw nothing in February. So just a tad disappointed.

Agree with Babs and the Jacks. Very minimal. The area in front of El Taj was a disaster, but I think that may be normal for that stretch bc of the geography of the shore, the boats, pier, etc. We were all up and down the beach in mid June, and the prettiest water by far was in front of Xaman Ha. Not a hint of seaweed and ultra clear. The area in front of Wah Wah was nice, too. The water got a little cloudier in front of El Faro, but not B-A-D. I got in it, and I can be picky. Coco Beach was nice, though there were small patches of seaweed that were intermittent and not a nuisance. If you are worried about seaweed, I think you can relax on that, at least for now, and hopefully for a long, long time to come. I am really grateful that Sargassumgate is over, for both the tourists, who love the beaches of the Mayan Riviera, as well as the locals who make a living off of tourism dollars.
