Loads to choose from. Immediately to the south is Pelicano Inn, then Fusion, and across 6th St from them, Luna Encantada condos. Immediately to the north is Alhambra, then Mosquito Beach and beyond them, El Faro. That only covers a couple of blocks and there are certainly several more in either direction.

Just Got Back

Just got back late Saturday - thought the Beach Bars/Clubs downtown (zenzi, etc..) had tiny beaches, everyone packed in like Sardines - best to head a little south of the pier wider beaches. Beaches in Playacar Fabulous. We spent a day in Puerto Morelos - glorious wide, calm beaches, not many boats to block your view..

I guess YMMV! I haven't been to PM in a while, but the last time I was, the beaches were hardly wide—rather narrower than in central Playa—and could not have been called glorious (especially with the ever-present masses of seaweed). But they were definitely less crowded...

Well I"m sure this changes from day to day - last week on Tuesday the beach downtown was so narrow - we were at Yan and Ten. Waves crashing maybe 20 or so feet from lounge chairs, if that. Went to Puerto Morelos on Wednesday - beach was 3 times the depth as downtown Playa. There was no seaweed at all at PM the day we were there so to us it was glorious - wide white sand beach, no stench like we had downtown that day (which I've read on this BB is quite commmon) uncrowded and calm waters---- but again, I'm sure this changes constantly.

Oh yes it does change quite frequently.

Not sure where you're thinking of as "downtown," there, but stench is not quite common on the beach throughout central Playa (= between the 2 piers), at least, if you read the reports.

Ryberg, Thank you for the list of hotels near Playa Maya. Now my research begins...or should I just go ahead and book at Playa Maya?

Here's a fun one, actually taken 5 days ago (underscoring how quickly the beach changes, and for the better as well as for the worse):

i'm really looking forward to Playa Maya. Are you going to be around the hotel in early July? would be nice to meet you. I'll be diving with Reef Quest a couple of blocks north. want to do rio secreto and whale shark snorkel as well.

i really appreciate the photos. it's nice to see what awaits.

Sounds like it was only a couple of days after you left, given your other comments. The previous shot (of the handstand) was taken 12 days ago now.

Oh, think we'll miss each other as I'll be back over the first half of June. Depending on the exact dates, however, you may be there when my wife is. She's been in the area for about 6 weeks now and is not coming back until early July. (She's much more charming to meet than I am, too, and a lot easier on the eyes. )
