Xul Ha - a hidden gem just south of Bacalar

This sleepy little Mexican town is filled with happy smiling Mayans and Mexicans, and also has a collection of expats that are calling it home.
Yvon Pepin introduced me to Jeff and Brenda Deval who started and run the Num Kaan Ranch, a movie-set-looking ranch complete with everything I needed to feel like I was on a Mexican cowboy ranch. The horses are great, and the trail ride beats anything I have ever been on before. Starting with a romp around the corral, we then wound our way through the jungle, traveling down the escarpment to Lake Bacalar, where we had a great swim off the dock before drying off and setting back to the ranch, where BBQ ribs, steaks and baked potatoes awaited us... Brenda makes pies and cakes and always manages to entice me away from my diet... They have a huge pool, freezing cold beers and GREAT food. To make the picture complete they even have really nice Cowboy cabanas that are rentable. I have always liked the Hotel Laguna in Bacalar, but this is definitely my new spot to go. If you are lucky Jeff may grab his guitar and sing some of his pwn songs, which in my opinion rival Eric Clapton in melody and lyrics. Jeff and Brenda's website is They even have sea doos and motorboats to rent with advance reservations, and the Bacalar rapids are very close by...ON Saturday mornings the local handicapped kids are welcomed in to have horse-therapy - Jeff and Brenda and their family are really great people.
There are some other places to stay in Xul Ha, too, that are less expensive than Hotel Laguna... they are on under Xul Ha.
From Xul Ha one can venture out to all the ruins nearby, too.
