Good hotel in Akumal with pool on (or near) the beach?

I will be in Playa next week, staying in town at Hotel Paradise. (Darn it, couldn't get into Playa Maya!). Part of my trip will be scouting for hotels for our upcoming trip in January. We plan on at least part of it at Playa Maya, but are considering doing part of it in a quieter location, such as Akumal. Looking for NON AI with a pool (for the kids, two 12 year olds), on or very near the beach, walking distance from a few decent places to eat (doesn't have to be fancy, just good). Akumal looks beautiful, and when I go snorkeling there next week, I will check out any hotels you suggest for me. Also open to other smaller towns near Playa, but must be no more than a 15-20 minute cab ride to Playa for a more lively evening experience.

Thanks, all!

Sally

Hi. We'll be in Akumal in a couple of weeks for our first trip. I've read lots of rave reviews about the Hotel Akumal Caribe. It's not an AI, it's on the main bay right on the beach, easy walk to restaurants, etc. There's also a kid's club. It's got a pool, mini-fridge, balconies. The end units supposedly have the best view of the ocean. We're not staying there as we could get a condo on Half Moon Bay cheaper and we didn't care about a pool. Although I believe there are condo complexes that have them. The Akumal Caribe has Villas, but they are older and not right on the beach. I've heard the rooms in the main hotel are the best. You might check out Half Moon Bay too - there are some nice condos there, and a couple of restaurants. Not as much as the main bay though.

Good luck,
Carol

Hmmm...

Not many places in Akumal that are beachfront and have a pool. We have stayed at one - Vista del Mar.
It's condos and a decent but kinda small pool.
Another option there is a private villa with a pool. Lots of nice ones that are reasonably priced.
Check out locogringo.com
Akumal is great and there are some really good places to eat there too.

I have just the place for you. Its La mirage condos and there is a pool next door at the tortugas that all la mirage guests can use. We have been there a few times although I can say barly use the pool as half moon bay is steps away, walkable to stores and eaterys but these condos have full kitckens we like Condo #4, 2 bedroom.

My sister has just purchased #4 Hacienda de la Tortuga. It is excellent: 2 BR, Kitchen, steps to pool and beach; restaurant downstairs. Available year-round, except when we're there! Contact me privately for further info if you want.

We loved the Club Akumal Caribe. Great pool, on the beach, wonderful service, very good resterant, good drinks and Guac in the bar, and ice cream-snack bar. Its beach is fun to swim and play on, water is perfect! Child friendly but not organized as in a 'kids club' way. Check it out at www.hotelakumalcaribe.com
