It's quick to all...plenty of short cuts. Asiana is a bit of a PITA as its outside of the lobby, but still close nonetheless. The 900 block of rooms is right above the quiet pool, El Med and the coffee house.

Maria Maria's tonight!

Thursday - 06.13.13

Had every intention on getting up, shooting sunrise, eating breakfast, spending a little time at the beach and heading into town for a massage and some shopping. The day turned out much differently, but have to say, I had a blast!

We started the morning at 4:15 a.m. which was much earlier than we had anticipated. We are one hour behind our normal time and we typically rise at 5:30 anyway, so this wasn’t off by much. Headed out to the beach for some sunrise pictures. Morning was gorgeous and not a soul anywhere. Got some good shots!

We headed back to the room to grab our beach gear and then head to a 7:00 a.m. breakfast before staking our claim to a lounger.

We had previously decided to try El Med for breakfast so we headed off to the quiet pool area. Quite impressed with the quiet pool area. It seems more taken care of than the bigger pools. Staff carefully roll up towels and place them on the loungers ready for guests. Was nice. Very clean. Got to El Med at 6:55 a.m. and checked out the menu. Will have to get a picture of the menu tomorrow, forgot today. Went in and asked for a seat by the window; lovely. It was hot in there, so we asked for A/C and the fans which they promptly turned on. Our waiter was Lucas. Super waiter, nice friendly face. Very attentive. We found that you could have buffet OR ala cart. We took a look at the buffet and decided that was for us. It was beautiful food and the best looking “buffet” I’ve ever seen. Small and to the point and had some typical Mexican food as well as a create your own omlet station which was really nice. By the way, the restaurant itself was very very nice. Felt much less like a “cattle station” than Spice. We like it here.

Habenaro sauce Lucas got for me...cause I like it super spicy!

The food was fabulous! We have decided this will be our breakfast location. Hands down, best food yet (but we have only had 2 prior meals!). So at this point in the Restaurant Showdown: #1 El Med, #2 Spice and #3 Pelicanos. We will see how this plays out.

After breakfast we headed down to the pool. Husband likes ocean, I like pool. We split the difference and settled on the loungers closest to the beach. Picked two on the edge of the pool across from the ocean front swim outs (by the volley ball net). Plan was to spend the morning in the pool/ocean, then head into town for a massage and eat lunch somewhere on 5th.

After yesterday’s time spent at the pool we were thrilled to find that today, it was much much cooler. Nighttime is friendly to pools. Place was deserted (and by now it was about 8:00) so we could swim freely and did several laps to at least “pretend” we were getting some exercise. No, I did not wait the 30 min after eating to enter the pool rule. It was fine. After about an hour, people started filtering in. Guy sat next to us at the pool ended up being someone I had chatted up on Facebook about the Royal. Small world.

A "my view" picture:

Having fun with the Lifeproof case:

Ended up meeting a lovely couple from England and their two sons. We hit it off right away and started talking. We talked until about 1:00 and decided to go to Pelicano’s for lunch. One reason we did (after dinner last night) was because our waiter from El Med breakfast was going to be there at lunch and highly recommended the shrimp ceviche. The Wolff’s decide to join us. Couldn’t find shrimp ceviche on the menu but Lucas took care of us. It was to die for! I also had the flank steak main course. Husband had lamb. Was so focused on my plate of food (what’s new) I didn’t pay much attention to what the others had. I did share with everyone so they got a taste of the steak. This meal brings Pelicano’s back up to the top spot so the score now is: #1 Pelicano’s (lunch only), #2 and almost a tie for #1 is El Med and #3 Spice.

Grilled flank steak from Pelicano's:

Back to the pool for an afternoon of talking and bobbing in the pool like plastic floats. Left the pool at 3 so we could get cleaned up and relax and head off to the lobby for a tequila tasting at 6:30.

Side note: Be careful when adding bubbles to the hot tub. This is what one tablespoon did:

So at this point, I have to say, I have had only 1 vacation “buzz”. That was the first day after two HUGE glasses of sparkling wine (excluding the 3 Bloody Mary’s on the plane). Today proved futile in the effort. Had 3 margaritas at the pool and just about the time when the tequila was to kick in, we ate. Same for the afternoon. The tequila tasting and a margarita at Asiana’s didn’t help much so the day was reclaimed by WATER. Oh well, we’ll give it a go tomorrow

Tequila tasting was informative if you could hear the poor guy over the group of 8 that thought the purpose of the tasting was to do shots for 30 minutes. Some of them were disillusioned and drifted out of the room. I found it informative on how to sip fine tequila vs doing shots. Lesson learned today. I think I will try this out as the week progresses.

Dinner at Asiana was awesome. I had the spring rolls (to die for!), shrimp sushi roll with cream cheese and cucumber (equally awesome) and shrimp in coconut sauce and vinegar for my main course which was again, awesome! Service was outstanding from Daniel.

Following dinner was the lounge band playing things like Santana which was very nice. We waited for the Wolff’s (they had reservations at Maria Maria’s) so we could all enjoy the Caribbean show. The dancers are amazing, and not to take away from their talent but it was just OK. I was simply in amazement of the abs on those tiny girls. Geez, nothing like making a girl feel less than perfect

We hung outside of the tequila bar until about 11:30 p.m. when we all had to call it a night. Sounds like an uneventful day, but it was a ton of fun!

More later as we commence full day #2…

Some randoms:

Kelli - This is the section you were looking at...38X's. Personally, I like the 900's. Closer to the quiet pool, El Med and the Coffee House. They have nicer bathrooms at that pool as well.

And Kelli, here are the 900's:

New swim - ups:

This trip report is KILLING me. Imreally don't think we can find another resort we like as mich but we feel so cheated now that our membership is no longer valid. Sigh...

I am happy you are enjoying it as much as we did! And your pics and narratives are priceless!! Love the hot tub shot, what a riot! And, Asianas was pur first and last meal ever year (along with 4-5 other meals during the week). Have a little extra fun for us.

Sad in Va...

WOW is all I can say! I think you just solidified my room choice but I hope it’s not much of an issue as I assume is a lesser requested room. I’m insanely excited about the quiet area for some reason. Love the pictures, they’re all so beautiful! I love the sunrise pictures and the picture of your husband taking a picture lol. I could eat two of those flank steaks right now.

Have a great evening!!

The construction going on was not an issue at all for us today, yeah, you heard it...but if you're doing stuff like talking to people you don't notice it at all!!!

Has to be local to you. Everyone else can. Are you viewing at work or something where there could be a firewall or similar blocking the url's?

Friday 06.14.2013

Another early rise today, but not as early since we went to bed so late last night. Spent some time on my trip report since the sunrise was a little lackluster this morning. Husband woke up and was having some issues...turns out he had drank some of the water yesterday afternoon accidentally...he is paying for it today. Luckily, I brought some Imodium. He is in the room as we speak sleeping. I'm alone at El Med relaxing over some coffee. Think we will lounge at the quiet pool today.

I should preface this next paragraph by saying if there is a mosquito within 10 miles of me, it will hunt me down and he and his nasty buddies will have their way with me. So I sit here scratching my legs with three bites. Not sure if it happened on the way over here from the Cobo wing or here around the quiet pool. I'll live but I'm highly allergic to "foreign" Mosquitos. Dang it...

Think I’ll get up, walk to the buffet and have some breakfast...Insert break in narrative here: writing this at the breakfast table.

Service this morning at El Med was not as good as yesterday. I had a dirty plate sit on my table for a good 10 min. That annoys me. But, the food was fabulous so that made up for it.

Hung by the quiet pool today. Digging the quiet pool area. Pool service by Elizabeth was great! She was around about every 15 min and kept everyone hydrated. Poor kid, pregnant and she still works so hard.

Met up with the Wolff’s and we just hung out and talked most of the day. Decided tomorrow we would do Playa. They have never been. We will shop and eat…FINALLY! Yay!

Husband finally emerges from the room about 11 a.m. He does great just drinking water and sitting in the shade at the pool. I’m charmed by the iguana’s as they scamper around. We did a “science” project and laid out a meringue covered strawberry for one. Didn’t take long, he ate it. Sweet! No pun intended!

One of three at the quiet pool:

The 900 block again Kelli. View from the pool:

Lunch at El Med:

Sorry, the whole day was a little relaxed. Nothing really exciting. We left the pool around 3 to head back to the room. We cancelled the Maria Maria reservations. I don’t want to waste a Maria Maria dinner when hubby isn’t “right”. We will do room service tonight. Already started by ordering a bottle of sparkling wine which was delivered promptly in less than 10 min. Note: I killed that bottle myself

Dinner was: nachos (typical nachos) and filet mignon with mashed. Husband ordered French Fries and a sandwich. He ate a few bites of it and then crashed. Hopefully, he will feel better tomorrow.

Turndown, right on time:

Today's towel art:

They replaced the "drape" over the bed. Not sure what was up with the other one, looked fine to me.

We watched TV. Big Bang Theory with Spanish sub-titles. Turns out the relaxing evening was good for both of us.

I love this place

I hope your husband feels better today! My husband was down an entire day last year because of a migraine, no fun but he felt very rested the remainder of the trip. Your food pictures are killing me, even the burger has me drooling!

Have you had any great margaritas yet? Is the tequila tasting only on Thursday's that you can tell? Hope you got to explor PDC today!

He feels much better! Trip report coming soon.

I think the tasting is only on Thursday, But honestly, you can go across the street to tequila town and they will teach the same stuff. The tasting only lasts about 30 min and you taste only two.

Having so much fun Kelli. I can't wait till you get down here yourself!

The only Thursday we're here is our last night so it sounds like we'll use your tip and try out the place across the street for the tasting. I almost forgot, I noticed that you mentioned a Daniel at Asiana. My husband's been asking me since the day we booked the trip if any reviews have mentioned Daniel at Asiana's since we loved him so much while on our honeymoon. I haven't seen him mentioned in any reviews since we booked so we're hoping he's the same one!
