The Royal Playa del Carmen, June 12 - 20, 2013

This may be a little early to start my trip report, but hoping to work out the bugs before the big day arrives.

We checked in last night at 12:01 a.m. for Wednesday, June 12th arrival.

We were preassigned room 238 by the concierge (after several emails back and forth). Even though we were preassigned, we were still able to traverse through the resort to scope out other available options. We checked out upgrade prices and options, ultimately deciding to keep what we already had.

Another awesome note...We were upgrade to First Class for the 4 hour flight down! Super pumped.

Packing for me is complete; dear husband, has a little more to do today so we are almost there.

Last notation: We "ordered" pesos last Monday for Friday delivery. Husband went to pick them up and ut oh, someone flubbed. NO PESOS! So they are overnighting them today. Should be at the bank tomorrow. I'm going to be ▄ber PO'd if they do not arrive. Can't wait to get this show on the road.

Be back once I have some more details/pictures or actually begin this event...

1 day and 20 hours to go!

10 hours to go until takeoff!

So, in an effort to bore you all to death with my excitement, I'll give you the last details of today's activities.

As I sit here with my glass of wine, the anxiety of today slips away. Major frustration came from the BANK !

So a week ago yesterday, we ordered pesos from the bank. I laid out a plan of giving them how much USD and which denominations I needed, for example: $200 worth of $20 peso notes. How freaking simple is that? Well, apparently, it's rocket science.

First of all, they messed up the delivery date of last Friday. Oh, duh, we don't have that. We will overnight them on Monday. You will have them Tuesday. (note, we are leaving Wednesday, tomorrow).

So we go to the bank to pick up the pesos and they totally had their own agenda about which denominations we wanted AND the total dollar amount. OMG!

I told the chick at the bank, "Dude, it's cool, I'm on VACATION tomorrow!" I'm not going to let this get me down.

I recovered then headed off to my eye Dr. appointment. Unbeknownst to me, I needed those dreaded little yellow drops AND they dilated my pupils. So I spent the rest of the day walking around like a real drug addict with shades on, scurrying from the light like a vampire.

Finally, the day is over, the last of the tasks are complete and honestly, I'm ready for bed. With a 3:30 a.m. alarm set, I'll need all the help I can get.

Let me finish this last glass of wine...oh, guess I should eat something. Nah, let's just have another glass of wine

More to come, but definitely not until tomorrow night. I'm bent on having a blast on my first day. Arrival time is slated for 10:43 a.m. Cancun time. Should be at the resort by noon and toasting my husband with a tequila shot by 12:30! I'm busting with excitement!

RPDC, here I come!

Hoping this pictures comes over...if not, sorry. Will figure it out.

I never thought about pre-ordering Peso's... I think I just find it easier to withdrawal them from an ATM once we're there... Enjoy your trip! We leave in 6 days for 11 nights in the PDC area, super excited!!

We thought about withdrawing there, but the fees from our bank were nuts, not to mention the ATM fees. It was more cost effective to pre-order

Sorry for your Peso frustration but happy that you put it past you. I know you can't read this right now but assuming there were no flight delays you'll be in paradise in less than 40 minutes. Have a GREAT 1st day and take a shot for me!!

6/12/2013 - Arrival Day!

Our first day of vacation! Rose at 3:30 a.m. for a 5:55 a.m. flight. Husband found that his wallet was missing 5 min before the cab arrived. Luckily, the airlines will take a passport as photo id. We stressed about that for Ż the day, realized it was useless and just let it go.

I realized after we made it through security, that I had left my iPad charging next to my bed. Those of you that know me understand that I can not live without my ipad. We had no car (since we took a cab) so could not go home and get it. We had no one to call. I decided that my best course of action would be to find one of those Best Buy kiosks at the Philly airport and hope they had an iPad Mini in there. I’ll fast forward and tell you that they did, it was perfect size, perfect color and I gladly bought it. Was able to board the plane first and got that sucker loaded and in perfect working order before we left the ground. Life is good.

Arrived at the airport and made it through customs quickly…got the green light! Quick trip to PDC via cancuntransfers. Smooth with no issue. Picked up in a black Ford Expedition. Nice driver, Gustavo.

Arrived at the Royal and everything was just as beautiful as the pictures…Amazing place.

Kind of got wrangled by the Real Club guys (in white shirts), got really tired of their nagging and finally told the guy to give it a rest and go away. He did. Just call them on their shirts, “Dude, your shirt says Real Club, don’t you think I know what you’re doing?”

Arrived at about 11:45, pissed around with luggage and this real club dude, finally got into see the Royal Concierge, whizzed through all that stuff and they said it would be another hour until our room was ready. 1:20 was ready time. That is still an hour and a half before I expected it to be so we were happy. Went off to Spice to have lunch.

The food was good at spice, but the selection wasn’t huge. I’ve seen bigger buffets at AI. But it served it’s purpose and we ate. The coconut ice-cream is absolutely divine.

Got back to the concierge to pick up our key…room ready, Hector got the bags and took us to our room.

The room is fabulous! Everything I had expected and the view from the room is amazing. This room has it all. And we LOVED sitting on our balcony watching the action, feeling the breeze and sipping on sparkling wine. Being in the shade in the late afternoon is exactly what I wanted. I am truly in heaven.

Went out to the pool for about an hour. Water is warm. Really warm. But get wet and get out and the breeze cools you off. Good stuff.

Came back up to the room, found a bottle of red wine waiting for us. I don’t do red wine. Husband called room service and asked for a bottle of sparkling white and well, within 10 min, it was on my table. Awesome!

As a quick side note, I'm not sure what the point of this guy was (below) he was blowing on this shell. Kind of anti-climactic if you ask me...nothing happened!

Today is Wednesday and we want to see the decades show so we will go to Pelicanos for dinner. Made reservations for Friday night at Maria Maria because tomorrow night, I want to do the tequila tasting. Been waiting for that. Call *7 from your room phone to get the concierge for reservations.

Spent another hour on the balcony sipping wine and feeling the breeze. Nothing better than this. The view, the room, the whole experience is exactly what we wanted. The Royal is delivering as anticipated.

Pelicanos was “ok”. Nothing to write home about. I did ask for fish tacos and got them. They were good, but I’ve had better. I’ll definitely be on the search for the best fish tacos in Playa; I’ll keep you posted. Husband had duck something. He’s a Duck Dynasty fan…hmmm, something tells me that really doesn’t equate to “good duck”. He said it was “ok”.

Some shots from the walk back to the room:

Our room building:

We “tried” to do the Decades show and just.couldn’t.stay.awake.

Back to the room we go, get ready for bed, try to turn on the TV and the remote wasn’t working. A quick call to the front desk and a maintenance guy responded. Dang these people are right on top of ANY request you have! New remote and we were good to go.

Just lovely!

Sorry if this report seems a little choppy. Wrote the narrative before dinner and finished it after. Too tired.

More later…

Love the pictures! Almost feels like I'm still there. Hard to believe it will be more than a year until we visit the RPDC again

Keep them coming! I've got 379 days of vicarious living to do!

It sounds like things are going great despite the wallet & iPad charger setback. What beautiful pictures & thanks for posting the menu!!! My pre-vacation energy has officially been recharged.

Kelli,

You asked about distance between what, the 900's and El Med or another location. Couldn't remember. Nothing is far from anything.

Ate at El Med for breakfast...to die for! Pelicanos for lunch...amazing. Asiana for dinner. Wow!
