Solo Traveler
I'm a 46yo solo woman (self-proclaimed broad, i.e. independent, outgoing, partier, gourmand, all-around bon vivant) looking to relieve myself of the AI scene. I've been to Playa many times but have not yet stayed in town.
I would love some input on accommodations. I've checked out the directory and find that just about all of them would suit my needs. Any pros/cons between downtown/uptown? Should I have any concerns being a solo woman staying in town? (yes, I already know the routine; don't leave your drink unattended, don't take candy from strangers, etc.) Any and all input is greatly appreciated. |

Carol,
I would put a bullseye on the intersection of 5th Avenue & Calle12 and find the hotel closest to it that meets your requirements. This area is grand central for the bulk of the night time entertainment and dining. That way if you decide to go out even late in the evening, you'll certainly find safety in numbers. Otherwise, you'll always have the option of choosing something right within in your block. Playa del Carmen is always friendly and rarely intimidating, so even if you're not overly outgoing you'll still feel like you're amongst old friends. Jimmy |

One thing is certain Carol, September is right in the middle of hurricane season. If it was me, I'd probably secure last minute airfare or at least get some kind of travel insurance that would protect you for cancellation due to a tropical storm or worse. As for hotels, they shouldn't be an issue at all that time of year since it'll be pretty much low season. You should be able to stay anywhere you like at a fire-sale rate. Given those circumstances, I'd probably shoot for a more upscale hotel or even consider a condo.
If you have questions regarding any small hotels in the tourist district, feel free to send me a private message. I'll definitely have an opinion to share with you and probably a fair number of photos. Jimmy |

Since Louisiana is very hurricane prone as well ......we get all kinds of "Hurricane Season Updates from the national weather whatever" and it said this season was to be a "heavy one" !!!!
The forecast (whatever that means )"predicted" : 14 Hurricanes or tropical depressions with at least 3 major ones in the Gulf of Mexico....so yes buy trip insurance.... |
