WhatsApp Taxi Playa is overall great and was super happy that this service existed. I had some problems giving directions of where I was at but after a bit was smooth and always got the rates they advertised.

Was also pleasantly surprised once downtown by the big mall on Constituyentes, I asked a driver for a ride to where we were staying and he said $120 which is no surprise, but he could tell our dismay and said 'if you go up a block someone can give you a ride for about $50'. Sure enough we walked up a block and someone drove right behind us and offered $60 to get us where we needed, I can only think he tipped a driver off.

Can I get that app here in the states, or do I have to be in Playa to get it? Is that the whole name of the app, "WhatsApp Taxi Playa"?

Its not really an app but more of a service. Download Whats App and make an account. It's similar to Facebook Messenger. You add one of these numbers to contact them:

9841381075
9841970814

Then when you need a ride just message them where you are at. You can also send a map which makes it really easy, half the time I don't know the streets or how to explain.

Then they send you the taxi number and within 5 minutes someone is there to pick you up. They add 10 pesos for the service but you always get the good rate. Was really fantastic but they sort of need to or Uber will drive them out of business.

Ok, I have the WhatsApp already installed, so I will just add those numbers. So instead of paying the $25 peso, I will be paying about $35 pesos?
Can I request more than one taxi at a time? I am travelling with 13 peeps, so getting taxis for everyone has me a little stressed about them getting ripped off.

You really find the street layout that confusing, that half the time you're befuddled?
And when have you ever waited 5 minutes for a taxi in Playa?

You really think that Uber will drive them out of business?

You need an app to get you a good rate?

Actually, What's App Taxi is pretty good.
They keep a log of the driver and if you leave something in the taxi or have a complaint - they know which driver you used.
Not that that means anything or will do any good
Unfortunately, they don't have enough drivers signed up (yet) so sometimes it's difficult to get service.
The taxi syndicate is supposedly working on a real app that they hope will compete with Uber. It should roll out in 2021

Rick, from my US phone, do I need to add the 011 52 1 before the phone number?

That would be very useful. I once left a very important item (no value to anyone else), in a taxi on Cozumel. Don't know how they did it, but located the driver and my item. Saved me hours and hours of work to replace.

I can certainly see the value in LucyE's case when she tries to get 13 people herded in the right direction.

That would depend on your cell carrier.
My T-Mobile phone remains a US phone when I'm there.
When I still paid the thieves at Verizon, and the knuckle heads at Sprint my phone became a Mexican phone as soon as I turned it on.

Unfortunately, we are with the thieves at Verizon, which is why I was asking to make sure I input it correctly now so I won't have trouble using it while I'm in Playa.

On the bright side, you do have superior coverage with Verizon. Unless things have changed, all you need to do is area code and number.

The roads in Playa certainly can be confusing. Look at 38th calle. It exists on both sides of the highway, but it's a completely different road that doesn't connect. And in Ejido, it isn't uncommon to not have road signs for a few blocks. Also the 1 way roads in the Centro can can mean they'll drop you off a block away (so they don't have to drive an extra mile to drop you at the door); this can be confusing to someone who doesn't know the area.

I've had to wait more than 5 minutes to find a taxi on Constituyentes at a restaurant on the other side of the highway multiple times. These services are great when you have a group of people and it's raining. Just buzz the taxi, hide inside, at your doorstep.

The whats app taxistas are just regular taxi drivers who banded together to use the app (everybody in Mexico uses whats app to message - and it's good worldwide - just messaged my son in Africa - instantaneous - free calls too). The only downside is that you're just as likely to get the same old untrained fast-driving taxistas who drive too fast, know nothing about the dangers of passing on the right or in school zones or clipping bikes and peds or kwik-changing lanes or passenger comfort or signalling or much of anything that has anything at all to do with safe driving, and are, frankly, dangerous as hell.

If you're lucky, though, your taxista will be the car owner (pa-tron') and usually a better driver, unlike the guy he leases it out to at the daily rate of $300 pesos for 12 hours who drives it like it isn't his car (it isn't). Once you find a safe driver you like, get his name, phone and taxi number and ask for him when you call the whats app taxistas. Happy taxi-ing. (and a load of suerte)
