I figured I wasn't overcharged by much. I always like to know what to expect before doing it though. I have traveled quite a bit and I have never really been taken advantage of because I stick to my guns and try to know what I am talking about.

I was told by 2 different cabbies lately that they were told to charge tourists double. I was arguing with him about the rate to Moms from here. All in Zone 1 . I told him that I am a local and he finally agreed on 25 . He was nice after that.

I'm goin to ask every time now before I get in. Today flagged a cab in front of the Dorymar, 20 pesos to Wal Mart. Get one from Wal Mart to the Dorymar, wants 50 pesos. There are rip offs everywhere and plenty of cabs, I'll just ask until I get a price I like.

Add 10 pesos from the insitio places, i.e. where the cabs are lined up waiting for fares ---- the grocery stores, foot of Constituyentes, bus station, ect.

If you ask they will tell you what you don't want to hear - usually.
But everyone knows how I feel so I won't continue to sound like a broken record

Last night picked up a cab on 10th ave. Texting till we got to 307, almost in 3 crackups. Stopped texting for 30seconds then started again, told him to stop or I would take his cell phone and throw out window - he stopped but was not pleased with me. My wifes safety and mine is too important to me to allow this to continue!!

We hand them what we believe is the right amount as soon as we get in the taxi and they never argue.

The only time we actually ask is if we are going a long way.

So far that system seems to work, we never get a taxi at a sitio

Nice spin on the routine-makes it like boarding a bus with no surprises (or yelling!) when you get off. Will use that next month for sure.

Give it a try, may not work every time!
Heck if they want 10 pesos more, big deal, it's
not that much and you'll get to where you want to go.
I find that being polite tourist rather than sassy know-it-all you're trying to rip me off tourist works better.
of course if they are trying to rip you off, like some do, then you don't take his taxi, and wait for the next guy.
