So, my experience in the last few days is that ever single taxi driver is insistent that its 90 pesos from zone 1 to Playacar. And I really need to start carrying exact change...it seems like it used to be that big bills were hard to break, but now I find I never have any coins. The taxi drivers are almost as creative as the guys on 5th, some of the reasons I have been told why the fare is not 70 pesos...I picked you up above 10th...I picked you up on 5th( we were not on 5th)... Only Playacar 2 is 70...the rates went up. It's really an unpleasant experience having to argue every time I get out of a taxi, and it's not like 90 is unreasonable, but I know once it officially goes up to 90 they will just star asking for more.

They are supposed to carry a rate sheet with them. Print out the rate sheet on this forum and carry it with you as well if you are having this much problems with the taxis. The entire downtown area all the way inland to the highway is in Zone 1 and it's 70 pesos. Just give them that and don't even entertain any arguments about it. Just walk away. Show them your map and rate sheet and ask him if his rate sheet says anything different. If not, then there's nothing more to discuss. That's what the fare is.

I tool multiple rides between downtown all the way up to calle 102 to the condo I was renting and that's only 30 pesos. Whenever I have hailed a taxi, told them where to go, not ask the price and paid exactly 30 pesos on arrival, not a single taxi driver complained. It's only the ones at the sitios that want more money. On the sitio on 5th avenue, one taxi told me in Spanish the fare would be 100 pesos without me asking. I laughed in his face and walked away. Hailed a cab and paid 30 pesos without problems.

Rule of thumb, you will have a MUCH better experience hailing a taxi than at a sitio. Use only when absolutely necessary

Article says there is a different rate for residents, but there is no link to a chart. Does anyone have that chart?

I believe it is 40p for residents, hotel employees.
As residents in our little community, we got sent an email to verify this when the new rate chart came out.

I have gone almost blue in the face arguing this matter with cranky taxistas (i have a copy in my purse as well as the chart!) and hence i really try to avoid using them when i can!

Hello, my name is Marion, i'm new to this forum so i hope to be writing in the right place. I'm looking for some help on transfer prices. I live in Ecuador but i have family in Cancun so i travel there constantly. Once i used a cab from the Airport to a private home i thought it was quite expensive, so the last time i went in February i booked a transfer with discovery mundo and they had a better price, also they were timely waiting for me. I'm going again in December with my boyfriend and i'm thinking of using them again, but would like to know if you have other recommendations/options to check them out. Thanks for your help!

Hi Marion

That's one of the only services actually sold on this site, keeping this site alive. We recommend our service.

Oddly that paper (like many others in Mexico) publishes information that is clearly wrong.

From The Pelican Free Press

Expect a hike in local taxi fares sometime soon. The state has approved an “adjustment” for local drivers who haven’t raised fares in five years despite higher petrol prices and cost of repair parts because of the increased IVA tax to 16 percent. The state says the increase will be “minimal” in order to accommodate workers who need the taxis…
