Christmas Dreams Playa 2013

Christmas Dreams Playa is a group of locals from Playa del Carmen and the surrounding areas along the Mayan Riviera who have, for a number of years, banded together to help provide happier holidays for the less fortunate in our shared community.

We collect donations of non-perishable food items, clothing, blankets, and toys to help feed and clothe familes and elders with few resources, and we love seeing the smile on a child's face when he or she receives a toy.

Christmas Dreams Playa has three projects they're working on this holiday season:

1. Providing gifts/toys for children at a school in the impoverished village of Nuevo Noh-Bec, just outside Playa del Carmen. Nuevo Noh-Bec has no electricity and no running water. Read more about Nuevo Noh-Bec here.

2. Providing help for a number of elders in the community who are in need of basic food supplies. Dispensas (packages of basic food supplies that are commonly sold here) will be perfect as starters, but they definitely need blankets, flip flops and additional beans, rice, sugar. We hope we can purchase these in bulk and divvy them up into zip lock bags.

3. Collecting donations of school supplies for needy schools in Playa del Carmen. These students come from very poor families and have few school supplies-- the teachers have literally nothing to teach with. They could all use age-appropriate school supplies and possibly backpacks if they could be donated. Crayons, markers, scissors, rulers, paper, pens, pencils, etc. are all needed. They can be given at any time after the holidays and can be given multiple times during the school year.

The Letters to the Three Kings from the school in Nuevo Noh-Bec have been scanned and uploaded. Read the letters and see how simple these wishes are--these kids are not asking for Ipads or Xboxes; in fact, they live in a community without electric or running water and will be over the moon about a soccer ball or a baby doll.

We have determined the average cost of each gift to be 25 usd per child--this means with just 100 usd you could give gifts to 4 children. For many (if not all) of these kids, this will be the only gift they will receive all year.

If you would like to sponsor one of these kids, simply choose 'your' child by commenting under their letter. If you live in Playa del Carmen, please purchase the item requested. This can be dropped off at one of three Amigos Network locations in Centro:

Wah Wah Beach Bar - Calle 2 on the Beach
Glamour Salon Unisex - Under the Mega Supermarket, Av. 30 & Constituyentes
The Bric Hotel @ Playa Del Carmen - Calle 28 between Av. 5 & Av. 10

If you don't live in Playa but would like to sponsor a specific child, simply comment under their letter and let us know you will be sending the 25 usd per child via PayPal to cover the cost of their gift. Then send your donation via PayPal to christmasdreamsplaya[at symbol]gmail[dot]com and please note in the comments the name and age or grade of the child you are sponsoring.

If you'd like to simply donate some funds to help any or all of these projects, please go to www.paypal.com and send your donation (no amount is too small) to this email address: christmasdreamsplaya[at symbol]gmail.com

Please specify in the comments of your donation whether your funds should be used for "General toys," "General School Supplies" or "General food."

Thank you for listening. More information and photos will be forthcoming.

Thank you Heather for taking the time to posts all the letters. My toys will be shipped to the person muling them for me next week! I believe she arrives on the 27 of Dec.
So happy to be a part of this, even if it is just a few toys. But I know how much it means to these kids.

In just 3 days, we've found sponsors for 64 gifts already, which leaves us 155 gifts to go by January 5.

I also have some 'random' toys that have been donated that I will keep in a big bag at the gift-giving party. These letters were written by school-aged children; I have a feeling there might be some kids who aren't yet in school (or who might have been absent on letter-writing day) who will be hanging around the party looking longingly at the kids getting gifts. I want to have plenty of extras so no child has to be left out.

Thank you for letting me know I'd forgotten to post that!

The gift-giving party for the children will be on January 7, so we need to have all gifts by January 5.

My mother in the Chicago/Milwaukee area has a number of toys she would happily send down if there is someone willing to "mule" them. She will meet you and pay any baggage fee required to take an extra bag.

A Christmas Dreams Update

This is a message from Gayle Collins and is going out to all of the Christmas Dreams supporters from last year.

Some of you have already contacted Christmas Dreams or made donations to fund the children and elderly for this year. Please accept our thanks for donating gifts of toys or money.

For those of you still wanting to spend your Christmas dollars in an incredible way, please give to Christmas Dreams Playa this year! With only 10 days left to go before Christmas, we are behind in being able to provide all the children at Noh Bec with gifts...WE STILL NEED 87 gifts to complete our mission of providing for the whole community. See the KKIS Project website for more information about the Noh Bec community.

We are also way behind on providing 200 elderly people with Christmas food baskets with 125 left to go.

Anything you can give will be appreciated by the community here in Playa del Carmen. You can pay by Paypal and the email address is christmasdreamsplaya@gmail.com

If you live in Playa you can also purchase a toy for a child. Information on gifts that are needed is on our Facebook page at Christmas Dreams Playa or contact us by email if you are not a FB user.

Thanks to all of you who participate in this incredible endeavor here in Playa. Your support is noticed by the whole community and greatly appreciated.

For those of you who are new to Christmas Dreams, here is a blog post about our work last year in Jose Maria Morelos.

It would be nice at Christmas time that you guys, including all the Rob groupies & everyone else who spends time in Playa give something to the kids & elderly, who live there & are in need! When you go to the Flea Market on Sunday; buy something small & donate it to Christmas Dreams?

You all travel there & complain about the taxi prices, stench, increases of pricing & whatever! Most of the people that wait on you, hand in foot, need more than your tips! I have put big money where my mouth is over the last 6 years; I'm just asking for you to put small money, as it adds up!

GRUMPY BAKERS: I know you guys help all over the place! Talk to Gayle: I will pay you guys to make WHATEVER ( Cookies & Cakes) to make Gayle's people have some Christmas joy! I will do it thru Gayle's account & she will give to you. If you have your own PayPal account; I'll do it with you.

PLEASE HELP!
