Red face

With head hung low . . . . .

I come slinking back onto the forum…….

It is certainly UNcalled for that life can get in between me and my PlayaInfo!!!
Rather than groveling and begging for forgiveness, how about I get to posting before it’s Halloween already again!!!!

So here we go.....................!!!

Okay, I noticed my last picture I posted at Dirty Martini was out of order; because it wasn’t dark yet when we were there then – that is a picture of Tuesday Martini Night TWO-FOR-ONES!

As for the Mega run, we got:
a liter of Absolut,
a 750 ml of wine,
a half a rack of Miller Lite,
4 bottles of Pacifico,
salami and cheese out of the deli,
crackers,
Johnson Deli bites,
some Mexican-brand 7-ups
and a bag of Cheetos.
It came to 763.26 (or about 58 bucks….)

Anyway, we made it back to Playa Maya for more beach time. A few drinks there; pictures would look much like the last…..
and then we were hungry.

Over to Carboncitos to try their Fish Tacos. They were pretty good (not as good as Playa Maya). Service was good.

The waiter brought our margaritas balanced on his head.

We split the plate of 3 tacos (160p) and the Margaritas were 75p each.

Now, it’s down to the END ZONE SPORTS Bar (on 5th between 12 and 14th) to watch the Seahawks on MNF!!!

Here we started with a bucket of Coronas for 150p and then many vodkas at 60p each…. Sixty pesos is certainly not a bargain for house vodka, but they had the game on, so…….

The HAWKS beat the RAMS 14 to 9, and it was a nail biter!!! But they GOT THE WIN!

We didn't have too much left in us by the time the game was over, so it was time for nite nite.

I've wanted to try Club Yebo. Great prices and location! But, I don't know if I'll ever be able to leave Playa Maya again. I guess we'll see how it is after the make-over currently under construction.....

Hope to see you in Playa!

Oct 29 TUESDAY

The Trek to Chemuyil

Today is our trek to Chemuyil, then short jaunt through the jungle to the Spider Monkey Sanctuary, “THE JUNGLE PLACE”! At the time we booked, the cost was $80 per person.

Today would also be our first colectivo adventure! The plan was to colectivo from Play to Chemyil and grab a taxi for the short drive to the sanctuary. I had confirmed via email with Heidi, of The Jungle Place, that we’d be able to get a cab in the tiny pueblo of ChemuyiI. It’s just a little over a mile from the village to the Monkey Sanctuary…..

So, one would even think that one may just be able to walk in from the pueblo if no cabs were to be found….. This idea would make our 46 km jungle journey come in at around 5 bucks! However, I knew better. The minute I would have helped my wife out of the van (in this VERY small Mexican village) and started heading off to edge of town and down a rugged dirt road into the jungle…… Well, let’s just say I KNEW that wasn’t gonna fly. So…… it’s probly gonna end up costing me a bit more than planned……. as usual.

After our delicious Playa Maya breakfast on the beach I decided to get a little more intel on this venture from our hotel guys at the front desk. It had, after all, been awhile since I had done the research and the details were now a bit fuzzy. My first red flag should have been that these guys hadn’t even heard of The Jungle Place (also known as Kuxi Kaax). And when I say “red flag”, I mean that I should have trusted my previous intel (much of which had been given directly by Heidi), and not even listened to these dudes.
They said it was NOT advisable to expect to find a cab in Chemuyil; it was such a small village. He recommended getting a cab in Akumal Pueblo and that the rates should be very reasonable. Now they had me sufficiently scared that my fuzzy research may be flawed, so I took their advice.

We found the colectivo process to be relatively simple, even for us non-Spanish speaking gringos! Some locals on the van helped us with letting the driver know where we needed dropped. In no time we were at Akumal Pueblo. The driver even turned off the highway and into Akumal village to let us out near the taxis.

A “Taxi Capitan” met us on the sidewalk. I expressed my dismay at the quoted prices. After a bit, he finally told me the best he could do was 40 dollars; 50 if he was to wait and give us a ride back. I said, “so….. 500 pesos for roundtrip?” and he nodded.
I thought that was quite funny, beings now he is taking $2 less than the one-way trip he had just quoted!

On to Chemuyil! As we drove through town I saw at least 5 taxis parked along the side roads! Thru town and down a VERY bumpy dirt road we arrived at Kuxi Kaax. We walked up some stairs to the balcony of Heidi and Joel’s home. We were able to watch the monkeys playing in their enclosures while they prepared for our tour.
Heidi and Joel are quite unique individuals. They made it very fun, while explaining just what we were about to experience and, more importantly, how WE were expected to behave. All jewelry, watches, sandals and such were removed. There was some worry about the safety of my wife’s dermal piercing. It wouldn't have been good for her or the monkeys if one of them would have ripped out the shiny little jewel….
Joel took each of our cameras and snapped hundreds of pictures for each group of people.

Now get ready for LOTS of MONKEY PICTURES!!!

I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND adding this to any Playa itinerary! It was so informative and FUN! Heidi and Joel are very committed to the monkeys and the cost of the tour is (I believe) the main way the sanctuary is financed.

Our cab driver was thankfully still waiting when we were done and we had him drop us in Akumal Playa. We walked out to the beach and found Lol Ha (not hard to find...); ordered beers and some food.

I had the whole fried Grouper (210p). I don’t remember what Angie had? The receipt says “PESCADO PAPAS”, so… maybe fish with potatoes? It was 135 pesos. The bill came to 505 pesos with 2 Sols and 2 Negra Modelos (40 pesos each)

My Grouper

It was very good, but a little hard to eat….

A cute couple was seated at a table near the beach and were doing their best at taking some selfies. I went over and offered to take a couple pics of them... (this is important in a minute…..)

Here are some random pictures of the beach in Akumal….

So, after walking the beach for a bit and checking out the prices at a dive shop to the south of Lol- Ha, we decided it was time get back out to the highway to wait for a ride.

Of course, as we're walking out past all the taxis, they are all saying "Get in, Get in!” “Where are you going Mr. Clean. Get in!" I wave them off, one after another saying "No. No!” “Colectivo.” “No. Thank you. Gracias." Several say, "No come with me, same price. SAME PRICE!" I think really? Ya, I doubt it.

This is still going on half way out to the highway, when a taxi catches up with us "Get in. Same price!", we hear again. I'm trying to wave him off, when the guy from the table that I took the pictures of pokes his head out; "No, really! Same Price! Come with us!"

It turned out to be a very nice ride back to town, talking with the hot young couple from "Orange County" for the cost of a colectivo. I don’t even know if we got their names, or if I just forgot them, but we were able to share some stories of our experiences in the area and hear about theirs. They were very nice, on their first trip to the area, for their Honeymoon. (staying near Cancun…. )

I can’t find any more receipts and only a few pictures of that afternoon, so don’t have details. I know we hit the Dirty Martini for the two for ones, and probably just stumbled around randomly for more drinks and food.

Halloween is only TWO DAYS AWAY……!!!

Okay.

Since the Holiday Weekend is upon us, Ithought I'd just get a quick post on Day Number 4 so that I can start working on HALLOWEEN!!!

Oct 30 WEDNESDAY

Today is to be our first beach day.

For breakfast on the beach, we had eggs and ham which was served with mashed potatoes and refried beans. Maybe it was because of where it was being served, but we both agreed it was the BEST potatoes and beans ever made! It was very good.

We got beach chairs and staked out our Playa Maya spot for the day. After a while, I went down to Wah Wah to meet our new friend Willie for a beer (we happened to meet him at The Dirty Martini on our first night in town, but I left that part out. I will probably have to leave a lot of Willie details out to protect innocent – I mean guilty).

That ended up being a two hour adventure, and I’m sure my wife was beginning to worry. Another couple staying at Playa Maya happened by (Frank and Shawnda) who were headed back to the hotel. I asked them to let Angie know that I was still at Wah Wah and doing fine. Frank said yes, he would be sure to tell her he just saw me at Wah Wah, drinking tequila with a one-legged Mexican hooker, and that all was fine….

I have no idea where the day went. The only receipt I have is for a bunch of 20 peso beers at Wah Wah and the only three pictures I can find are:

….of the morning’s Playa Maya towel art

Whooopie!

And this one; of which I don’t have one single brain cell of recollection of where this was taken

I eventually made it back to Playa Maya.

……and Angie’s first comment is, “You musta had quite a time with the One-legged Mexican Hooker!”

We ordered more drinks.

Fish tacos.

Drinks.

More drinks (you get the picture)

We finished the evening having drinks and listening to music on our balcony. What a Beautiful View!!

We SURE DO like room 301, but I’m really hoping Steve gets his permits and that these hints about a 4th floor come true. I can’t imagine how much we’d like 401 or 402!!!!
