Fair enough. Perhaps I misread. We have found AI's with large groups work best. 2 years ago, we brought 13 people. Going to town with them was like trying to herd cats! last year was with Roni and Kathy. 4 days in a condo on Isla, and 4 days at Playa Palms. Awesome time. This year we are bringing 23 people. Some 2nd and 3rd timers and some newbs. AI all the way on this one. That's too many cats to herd!

I know lots of folks that don't, won't do AI's. That's all good, but saying AI's are a mistake is an opinion, not fact. But anyway, that's also just my opinion.

Cheers.

Katz, I remember your posting days on Trip Advisor. You used to quite regularly tick people off on there, I believe you were known for your troll behaviour.

You aren't there anymore, huh? What happened?

Especially if it's The Allegro
You are not far off on that one. We did go shopping in the little mall across the street and used Starbucks wifi to check on a tropical storm while we were thre. Went to Playa Del Carmen one night only to meet people at WahWah which was closed.

Relaxing is all we ended up doing even though we had grand plans before we got there.

I believe I am being picked on here. To explain our Allegro experience. It was our first time to Playa and fit our budget. We had plans to do things and just enjoyed the beach. We don't drink so probably got not as good a deal as the guys with the tequila turned up all day.

If you don't count the rooms with no air conditioning for three nights, or eating in all the places with no air conditioning for a week you will be fine there. The coke was not watered down that I could tell. Food was ok but nothing to write home about. We did the Mexican specialty rest. there and it was great.

I took my wife downtown the one time and she absolutely stated we would not stay anywhere down there. If it was just me I would probably stay in Playa Maya or another place highly recommended here and explore.

We are thinking about the Iberostar in Playa for our next trip because if momma is happy everyone is happy!

Rissak I was banned because I ran a foul of the destination business interests in the Riviera Maya. TA property reviews are estimated at about 18% fake and both TA and the property interests don't like that sort of honesty. Troll behaviour? not hardly. When the topic was weather I posted about the weather, its that simple. TA is populated by many that cant read a weather report (so is loco gringo). when they are explained to them they have some sort of need to get upset. I frequently get asked to return to TA and post but that clearly cant happen. Actually there are forums out there were people discuss actual travel issues and you never see a question about how to read a weather report so its for the better.

I feel as though this has really gone off topic. The nice gentleman and his wife only asked a few questions, they did not really want someone to negatively reflect on a choice they had already made.

On the question from them there are some excellent thoughts and responses from peeps. Is it possible to keep this on topic, or you can start another thread on how much I hate AI's and you can measure each other there.

That being said.

We started our traveling by doing AI's and we or I still do them if I see a great deal at a 4.5 or 5 star as I enjoy the amenities those levels offer, which include great top shelf liquors and the spas. I know after over 20 years of Mexico I have really tried every type of lodging and on the most part enjoy them all. One week is really barely enough time to relax. If I ever have newbies with me Tulum Ruins, then a nice lunch spot on the beach or in town and then a Cenote is a full and excellent day. I still remember my first Cenote and my boys, how thrilled they were with their first Cenote swim. There are many some easy to get to and some more difficult, but look here or google and you will find them no problem. You could even hook up with a day tour, which you can find here or elsewhere, for a first timer this is a great option, which allows you to look around and decide if next time driving is AOK with you or not. Tours also provide someone who can answer your questions as they come up.

From where you are, I stayed close to you at one of the AI's last year, there was a lot of beach scene going on. The sky divers were landing nearby, the kite surfers were out in abundance, which also meant the ambulance dudes were kept busy and the people who are walking the beach provide people watching galore, the sea is busy with traffic from fishing boats to big tankers.
A bit of a walk to the North are the beaches and beach bars of Playa, most have menu's and happy hour or drink special information on them so you can choose as you go. You can walk for hours to the North on the beach, just remember the colour of your hotel umbrellas for your return

Once you have wandered far enough you can head up to any of the avenues and wander around and back to your Hotel or catch a cab and get a ride. The map here on this site is really great. There are nice little surprises all over Playa, which you will find as you go.

Centro Maya is across the 307, Big Highway running North to South you traveled on from the airport, for anything you may need. Soriana has alcohol, sunscreen, food, towels, coolers, ice……….also inside is an arcade, beauty supply store, clothing store and nice mall to wander in. Not huge, but more than likely has lots of whatever you may need.

On the way back towards Cancun in Puerto Morelos is Crocacun, we have taken many newbies there and everyone always loves it. Rescued critters n stuff one cannot or does not want to see out wandering about. A bit pricey some say, but we have never had any complaints when we have stopped in there. Puerto Morelos on the water, a 5 minute drive from Crocacun has the best book store I have found in the Riviera Maya as well as some nice shops and restaurants to choose from.

On 5th Ave, southend ish, is the ADO and other bus companies station, ask your concierge or front dest for directions and walk there for your trip down to Tulum or PMorelos etc, easy and relatively in expensive to travel. If you choose to use Collectivos, they are awesome, but it took me a few trips to figure them out and feel confident to get out there and give em a try.

Fat Cat Catamaran = fun as well

Enjoy your week in and around Playa, I am sure like many of us you will love it and figure out what you require on your next trip to the area. Welcome

I am sure my spelling on some of the sites is incorrect for that enjoy Playa

Actually my comment is dead on topic .... maybe. The OPer has commented about wanting to explore the local food scene. I have no way of knowing the extent of their desire to go off property but if they do it a lot the food/drink part of the AI pricing is wasted money. Please explain how you know what they want.
