Road Trip!! - Carnaval in Valladolid 2014!!

So we went for a short road trip to Valladolid with Kim (Silvergirl) and Kenny, not taking into consideration that it was Carnaval time. I love surprises! Here are some of the better pictures of our adventures.

When we got to town, it was obvious that they were prepared for a fiesta:

Night fell and it was obvious something was going to happen, but we weren't sure what. So we grabbed some open seats and waited. And waited. And waited. Bands were setting up on each corner of the square and crowds were gathering.

There were some very strange sights...

And whole families waited together.

What ARE we waiting for? Everyone seems to be wondering.

We finally realized that they were just going around and around and around the square. I think it was a march-til-you-drop parade! So we took a short break to go grab a fresh camera battery and they were STILL going when we came back! But I got some better, closer pictures this time.

The marchers finally faded away, but the bands played on! (Lonnnnnng into the night, I might add!)

And the vendors vended...

And we called it a night and had a margarita and closed our eyes with the music thumping away for who knows how many more hours!

It was a fun get-away and I LOVED watching the excitement of the participants from toddlers to grannies and all between in all shapes and sizes and the time and thought and effort that went into it all! I have no idea the significance of half of it but I was delighted with the whole event!

Thanks, guys. We'd make it a point to be there for Carnaval, again, I think! Of course, we do really love Valladolid, anytime.

Great pics!! Wow -- the black face Aunt Jemima ladies....no PC police in Mexico, eh??
I wonder what the leprechaun kid was all about.....

And one group of women looked like they were wrapped up in those button candies we used to eat off the paper!!

Great stuff, what an experience!

question

What is the "carnival" celebration... I've heard "carnival" several times when referring to different cities in Mexico is this a celebration of semething specific or just a parade in general?

Wikipedia probably has the best explanation for it HERE. As a non-Catholic raised in rural Ohio, I had no clue about any of it either. For the most part, I still don't, but I'm awed by the spectacle of it!

And thanks to all for your kind words, too - it's fun to share Mexico!

The folks in blackface are not quite PC, but who cares, looks like it was a hoot!
