Want to shop? Tell a taxi to take you to the plaza. Want to snorkle? Tell a taxi to take you to the Money Bar. By not driving you will miss the best Cozumel has to offer.....the East side.

Just my $.02

You can bike on Cozumel but it is really hot under the sun biking there. No shade. You can bike the east side and got o the beach.
That is why Cozumel is not my favorite place. Depending on how much time you have, there are other day trips out of Playa that are nicer or fit you better.

You do not need a car to see the east side. If you want to tour the island you can hire a taxi for the day and see the island with many stops along the way. I think it cost us about $80.00 USD.
I drive when in Mexico but wanted a day off and just enjoy a "few" margs, etc along the way so we did this a couple years ago. Worked out well.

I would say if you are planning on spending 4 hours on Cozumel, it is not really worth the trip unless you are going to go straight to a park or something like the Atlantis submarine. You are spending time and money on the ferry and honestly the best things in Cozumel are under the water.
I would prefer going to Punta Venado beach club, cenotes, Tulum for the day as an alternative.

To me, the best part of going to Cozumel is the ferry ride back to Playa
Cozumel is great for divers but not much for your average tourist there, IMO.

We're divers, so spend a lot of time on the island. If it weren't for our diving --- ppfffftttt.

Oh I know what they said, and you can go straight to the east side
via carretera transversal and then still come back around the south in a "few hours".... very few. Unless you get stuck slamming margaritas at Coconuts. Just one good reason to hire a cab.

About my only reason to go to Cozumel = Coconuts and looking at their photo albums and and I almost forgot the great views.
Also like the Money Bar for food and drink = casually cool place.

IMO, the best thing to do in Cozumel is snorkeling. There are gorgeous reefs and sea life there. The East side is also very cool.

I don't think the trip to go if just for shopping or dining is worth it at all.

Another 2 cents

Done it hundreds of times. Just couldn't imagine rushing to get there and then spending minutes at Mezcallitos, Senior Iguanas, Playa Bonita, Coconuts, Paradise, Bob Marley Bar then rushing back to the ferry. No time to stop and check out the ironshore and blowholes etc. Can it be done? Sure. But you really need to take the time to take it all in. It's awsome!

VW Bug to BMW.

Edit: That was a bit silly. Let's go with Toyota Camry to BMW
