Want to rent a car but....

don't want to use my credit card or debit card tied to my bank. What are my options? Will an agency accept a prepaid debit card? I don't want to risk fraud hassles.

I don't know of any car rental places that will rent to you with out a card to place a hold on while you rent. Maybe and just maybe if you by full coverage from them, then they don't really need a card to place a hold on since you are covered.
The other option is to use your card here for everything, check you bill and then change the number. You do realize that credit card theft can happen anywhere but it has been a concern at rental car companies here in Playa.

Use Avis on the highway. I have rented off them at least 25 times, never any fraud issues. The most legit operation in town, by far (believe me, I've tried them all). Book on their website for the best rates - avis.com, location code PC3.

Avis sounds good. If not I rented five times through America car rental in feb-March and they were good to me. Located on 28th between 5th and 10th. Always used a card and no problems but they might take a cash deposit not sure. I booked through Tulum Car Rental - WHAT YOU SEE IS WHAT YOU PAY and it was cheaper. Good luck!

I have too many things tied to my credit card to risk fraud and having to chahge it. I'm wanting to buy a prepaid credit card and load it with $1000.00 or so. They offer them now with your name embossed on them just like a normal credit card but they all say "currency card", "cash card" or "debit" on them. I'm not sure if that would make a difference to the agency or not. Just thought someone might know.

Why not just get another CC? They give them out like candy.

I think thats probably my answer. Spoke to BOA today about getting a card with a 1K limit and they said no; The card would have a limit set according to my credit and income. I don't wan't another 25K credit card and don't want to experience the problems associated with fraud. I had a coworker go through it recently and have read plenty on the internet about fraud associated with Mexico inparticulary Playa and the car rental business.

Dono, we've only rented a couple of times in Playa and they required a 3000.00 hold on the card which was an Am Ex. Better check it out before getting the new card.

you don't have to accept their limits. i've called at least one credit union and requested a lower limit. i'd had the card a long time and, periodically, they'd raise the limit. when i began using a different card, almost exclusively, i realised this card limit was more risk than i wanted.

In the 16 years I have been coming to PDC, the ONLY place where my CC was ever compromised was at AVIS. But, it was the one in PDC (5TA Avenida, Entre Calles 6 y 8 Norte) and not on the highway.

As I posted on another thread, my card WAS compromised at the Avis on the highway. It was some time last year.

If I were a thief in the credit card skimming business, I would hire all my friends to go work at car rental companies. The clerks take an imprint of your physical card so they have access to the 3-digit code on the back, they get your signature, your date of birth and your address. Its perfect really when you think about it.
