Stayed awake for Letterman last night ... Barack Obama was the lead-off guest.
Very impressive appearance. His comments seemed truly unscripted, his humor genuine and spontaneous ... he seemed very comfortable in his own skin. It was striking how much it reminded me of the tapes I have seen of JFK's press conferences.
And it wasn't an "oh, I'm on Letterman, I'd better be funny" kind of thing. The conversation was, for a show like this, fairly substantial.
I especially liked his comment about how he is meeting people on the campaign trail, who voice to him their fear that America has lost its position in the world, and will never recover it. He said that he feels that America can come back, that one of the reasons the world is down on it right now is because we, as a country, are held to a higher standard than anyone else -- and we should celebrate that fact.
I'm thinking he's my guy. ANy number of interesting options for his VP.
I am hoping for a real reawakening with this campaign.
