Rocky was a character.
Dealing pot out of his artificial leg.
And that harmonica playing...oh my, that harmonica playing

Don "Rocky"Hlady

Hi everyone,
My name is Tom Hlady and I was Rocky's youngest brother and live in Las Vegas Nevada. I just heard of his passing a few hours earlier and wanted to say a few words .
He was born on April 21st 1947, lived in a small town in Illinois (Homewood). Went to the Univ of Michigan Ann Arbor, and then moved out west to Santa Barbara area,California.from there he moved to Playa where he loved the weather, people, tourists and seemed to make many friends. He had many health issues and when I married my wife Joyce, prior to my wedding he had a serious accident that cost him his foot and some use of his hand/arm. When this happened he vowed that he would get out of the hospital,do his rehab, get better and have a special dance with my wife, which he did.But over the years he continued to have health issues that I'm sure some of his friends knew about. But he didn't want to let that stop him. He loved living down in Playa and always told some funny stories as he was quite the character and set in his ways, and don't get him started on politics unless you wanted to here an earfull.
His other brother Craig and his wife Jean will be flying down there Wednesday to make arrangements and I also hope to come down as well as soon as I get some more details and would like to meet some of his family down there.
Rocky is in a better place now and no longer suffering and may he rest in peace.
Love you Bro, say hi to Mom & Dad.

You and S.S. should re-read the original post.

I have been coming to Playa since 2000. When I first moved here almost 8 years ago and went to the Beer Bucket almost nightly for the first year or two. A lot of Playa characters hung out there. Rocky,Tom Lee, Jim Frye, Sharky, Capt. Ron, and a host of other folks, names and faces which I remember and many I don't remember. Rocky will be remembered by all that met him and all that knew him.
Rocky always had his corner seat so he could keep a eye on his rusty old bike. He was a daily/nightly fixture there. Some of these folks have moved on, some have passed on.
Rocky R.I.P.

Truly sad to hear. We met Rocky at the Beer Bucket during our first visit to Playa in 2007. Have a nice picture of him and my wife chatting over a beer. A unique individual who danced to his own beat is the best way I can describe him.

Condolences Tom. We've been going to Playa for about 15 years and we always looked forward to running into Rocky. He probably didn't know us, but we say Hi and talk to him for a while, maybe buy him a beer and hear a tune. We'll miss seeing him.

Thanks to Al for letting us know, and our condolences to Rocky's family and many friends.

Rocky was the first person we had a conversation with in Playa, in December 2006. He was friendly, funny, and kind. We look back so fondly on that afternoon.

We ran into Rocky on another trip not long after that, at the Bucket. We bought him a beer and thanked him for the nice introduction to Playa the time before. He gave us several postcards that, if I remember correctly, were made from photos he had taken. They are treasures.

Rest in peace Rocky - hopefully somewhere with a bike, a beach, and warm breezes.

Nicely said.
We have a few of his postcards, too. Whenever I run into them they bring a smile to my face.
