You're welcome!
But seriously, anyone got the answer to my question? I'm thinking of coming in June to the Pelicano, and as much as I appreciate this project, I'd think it might be kind of a bummer to have this equipment as part of the landscape. I'm honestly not trying to be a jerk about it. It's just that I haven't been back to Playa for two years now, and since I can only come for a week, I'd like everything to be as PERFECT as possible.

Well I believe the idea is to sink them in further, you see, to assist the (new, incoming) sand in making them invisible. I think it's fairly safe to assume that leaving posts sticking a few feet up and out of the water isn't the idea.
Of course, you never know what bureaucrats might come up with, either... Steve |

Mother Nature
Interesting project and pictures. There must be some money and politics involved. Over the past 15 years I've seen the beach come and go. MY OPINION. It's not nice to play with mother nature (nor usually succesful).

Reviving this thread with some new info from this morning.
A representative of the Real Group hotels was working along with two men from the States on the line of poles + net nearest to us on the north side, in front of the Alhambra. The American men were with BRL: Beach Reclamation (A Georgia LLC), according to the logos on their caps, and informed me that this is actually a project being run by the hotel association, which a GPR representative is currently chairing (thus indicating that this must be the association consisting mostly of larger hotels, the Asociación de Hoteles de la Riviera Maya, as opposed to the small hotel association, which also exists here). So although it has all been approved by the city, it is not accurate to say that it is a city project. The BRL reps informed me that the idea was to leave the poles and nets in place until a sufficient amount of sound had been recouped -- one mentioned 6 feet (meaning vertically), which evidently referred to some measuring point at present beyond the water's edge -- and said that they had already been seeing remarkable increases toward that goal. Then when things were deemed finished, they would simply lift all poles and nets out of the water and go home, leaving behind a 1-year guarantee, subject of course to acts of nature, etc. When I told him I'd been on the same spot a couple of years ago and watched hurricane Isidore take away several feet vertically of sand and throw waves into my restaurant, and asked him what would happen then, the same rep said, "You ask a very good question." But he smiled and proceeded to tell me that they are leaving behind plans in digital format showing the precise location of every hole they put in place and are also training the GPR rep I saw such that a team here would have both the info and the expertise to simply reinsert said poles and nets as long as necessary until the sand was again recouped. So there you have it. Hope this is somehow enlightening! best, Steve p.s. The beach does look better right now than it did around Easter. We have virtually no rocks in our section at all, and the fluffiness factor of the stretch nearest the water is definitely way up, as well.
