Those are interesting comments, because word on the street is that it has cost the GPR nothing. That is to say, they have failed to pay. And that that is why the company doing the work left before finishing.

I grew up in a NJ Shore resort town. Snow fences or poles and netting are great for building sand dunes but they aren't really effective at or in the water. They have the same effect as groins or breakwaters. Sand builds up in one direction of the litoral drift and gets "mined out" on the leeward side.
Reef replenishment is and has been the only viable answer. At a recent visit to The Florida Aquarioum in Tampa I learned of some interesting research going on. Corals that have been saved and raised in captivity are being "toughened" for a return to the ocean where they will be "planted" on artificial reefs. They will also be used to replenish reefs that have been dammaged by groundings and such. It makes sense. Similar reef building work has been an on going project off the New Jersey coast. Between sand dune growing and reef building, at some point in the future New Jersey won't have to depend on the US Army Corps of Engeneers to replenish our beaches through pumping sand. Our beaches will maintain themselves naturally. |

Does anyone know how the beach in coming along at the Mayan Riviera? This will be my first time there and so I am interested in the whole resort and also noticed that there seem to be a lot of smaller hotels at good rates in Playa Del Carmen. I want to know if there are any that you would have a refrigerator and deck that is either right across from the beach or on the beach and what type of pricing.
Thanks, Linnea |

To answer Linnea's aging question first, check the post-Ivan photo thread and related commentary on ever changing beach conditions here.
Now for some news, a very well placed source has indicated that the posts and nets will be removed by the end of October!!! Steve |
