beach reclamation project (photos)
OK, thanks to James I can now submit these photos of the beach reclamation project in process. Sorry I don't have any photos of nets, which I gather from others' comments are already in place elsewhere, but which I have yet to see around here. The photos shown here were taken March 30th, for the record. However, they also give a good idea of what the beach looks like again now, after having recovered remarkably well and quickly from the storm we had over Easter that took away a lot of sand.
A tidbit to throw in: this morning, for the first time in the memory of anyone here (including me and a couple of others who have been here for the entire 1-year, 9-month history of the hotel), the city appeared in the form of a huge John Deere tractor with a beach cleaning/leveling apparatus behind, itself of considerable size, to make the beach look better. They declared that they would return tomorrow. So things are looking up! Steve ![]() ![]() (Note the lines of poles headed into the water on both sides of this shot.) |

I have seen the tractor a couple times in front of the ****** over the past 5 years and thought they gave up because of all the boat ropes.
Thanks for the pictures--looks like we're getting more beach. What is it doing by the Real? |

Wow - looks like a lot more beach from 1 day ago.
We were just telling a friend of ours how much the beach changed in the week we were there. 1 day rocks. Couple days later beautiful sand. Few days after that a mound of sand. It happens all up and down the beach - not just the Playa Maya. |

Hey, Dave & Stacey! Hope you had a good trip back and got home safe and sound without difficulty.
You didn't even see the whole of the change, either! This is what makes it so difficult to respond when people say "what's the beach like there?" as if it's a fixed thing. Steve |

So what is the beach like there Steve? We will be there in May and August, will there be lots of sand? And what about the weather, is it going to be really hot in August? Will it rain?
I'm sorry, I couldn't resist. You set yourself up for that one Steve. But seriously, will we have nice weather? Man, I crack myself up. JT |

How about November? Will there be sand then? And weather?
JUST KIDDING! I do have a real question, though. From the pics, it appears there are not so many boats tied up on that stretch between Playa Maya and El Faro. Will this reclamation project interfere with their tieing up there? It looks like it won't really interfere with swimming, right? I can certainly understand why the Porto Real wants to do something about the beach on their end. It was washed away nearly up to their foundation when we visited last Nov/Dec. I hope it works as planned. Mave |

Or maybe the one you saw was a private one hired by the hotel? Steve |

Were sand dunes ever indigenous to the beach? If so, I hope that the beach reclamation project includes regeneration of dunes. Here on the East coast of the US Sand Dunes are a real important part of the whole beach system.

OK, the netting has arrived! And I've got shots of it now. So here you go.
And by the way, just to clarify, this is not a Playa Maya project, but rather a Playa del Carmen project! (Some people sent messages which suggested that wasn't clear too them the first time around.) Now we wait for all that to be sunk in further and out of sight...
