If Calle Corazon is going to look like that, I prefer it be blocked by the pole. It looks like what I see going up in Santa Monica, Seattle, Denver---anywhere really. The original, pretty, people-scaled Calle Corazon always reminded you of where you were, and why you came.
I have always admired the friendliness of the Mexicans, their open-ness and lack of pretension (no need to be a VIP to get a nice restaurant table) and Mexico is of the few countries left with a strong handicraft tradition. I don't see any of that reflected in the slick buildings with looming facades and expensive shops that seem to be the flavor du jour for Playa.
I have read that this is what the residents want (along with the European visitors who will find the high prices reasonable). As an American I know why I liked visiting Playa (5 years in a row) and I don't like a lot of what I see happening now. The "new" Calle Corazon, especially, gives me no inspiration to return.

Not only well said, but very well said.

I liked Calle Corazon. Liked. Not necessarily loved.
It did not define Playa.
It was a pretty street, less than a block long with mature trees (since relocated) strung with pretty lights, benches and various shops/restaurants.
I believe Calle Corazon is being overly romanticized.

Walk up 5th between 34th and 38th. There a pretty half block "alcove" with mature trees strung with pretty lights, benches and various shops/restaurants.
It's quite pretty.

The little leather bling shop

Didn't there used to be a little leather bling shop that sold hand made leather bracelets and necklaces on Calle Corazon? Is it still open in Playa somewhere?

Joe Natural has departed the area and moved on in his words "to the lower hanging fruit". Wherever that is.............

A cool shop with handmade leather goods, jewelry, bracelets, etc. is located on calle 14 between AV. 5 & 10 = YULANGA

Thanks AbsoluteAL

Ah yes, Joe Natural, that was the one. Hopefully we will get a chance to check it out your recommendation when we are back in the area this fall.

Joe (un)Natural was quite a character for sure and and like I said, he has moved on.

Pretty sure you will be impressed with YULANGA's leather goods/bracelets. Also, the shop is on the street that was on the north side of Calle Corazon, calle 14.

If you happen to be near North Texas in the DFW area, Joe Natural comes to Grapevine twice a year to our festivals, and we stock up on his lovely jewlery and reminisce about the old Playa days.

Still has a website too

Thanks stargazer. I see there is still a website too, though it is not very functional. New York is a long way from TX, but you never know... I will suggest that he put a "touring" schedule on his site.

See if you can find Joe Natural on Facebook. He usually keeps everyone kinda up to date on where he's going to be. He does festivals and stuff all around the country, I know he was recently at Bonaroo. But...I do use the word "kinda" on purpose. He's not exactly a strict scheduling kind of person. More like a "wibbly wobbly, timey wimey stuff" kind of guy. He's a great guy, love him (and his brother Brian) to pieces.
