Pre-Trip Report: Royal Playa Del Carmen August 8th-13th

Pre-Trip Report: Royal Playa Del Carmen August 8th-13th
INSTALLMENT #1

Hi all!

I have been reading and enjoying all of your trip reports (especially those from RPDC!!!).

My boyfriend and I will be visiting RPDC in a few weeks from August 8th-13th. I recently graduated from law school and I am currently studying for the bar exam and COULD NOT BE MORE EXCITED!!

Why we decided to go with RPDC:

Prior to graduation I had already made up my mind that I wanted to do a post-bar vacation. My family was throwing a big graduation party for me (and my family is HUGE), so I knew I would have enough funds from gifts to enjoy a nice getaway. I knew I wanted to go to Mexico and stay at an all-inclusive...so to the internet I went to search for options! My first and only other AI stay was at the Hard Rock Punta Cana:

Hard Rock Punta Cana was an amazing experience and I knew I wanted to replicate that experience as much as possible in Mexico. I wanted a resort that was at least 4 stars, had a swim up pool and a beach, a nice variety of restaurants, nightlife, and a room that featured a fully stocked bar and a jacuzzi (as the Hard Rock Punta Cana did). I was also searching for a place where it might be safe to leave the resort, as my boyfriend is the adventurous type and likes to go exploring.

I searched and I searched and although I found a lot of "nice" resorts, none of them really had all of what I was looking for. One day while chatting with my boyfriend's sister, she told us about the great experience she had in Playa Del Carmen on her honeymoon. She stayed at Gran Porto Real, but suggested I stay at their sister resort, which she claimed was much nicer, but did not know the name. So one search in google, and there it was:

EVERYTHING I HAD BEEN LOOKING FOR!! After researching all of the amenities and reading all of the amazing reviews, I went ahead and booked our vacation from August 8th-August 13th. Now I am just counting down the days...

I plan to update my pre-trip report in the days leading up to the trip to discuss transfer services, packing, and what activities we plan to engage in... because this is the only thing I have to look forward to while studying for the bar exam!

QUESTION TO THE CLASS: What is your favorite room at RPDC? I've heard very good things about rooms 397, 355, 337, 338, 348 and 349. We originally planned to upgrade to one of the swim up rooms, but after learning about the construction on the resort, that may no longer be an option (I am a VERY light sleeper and would like to sleep in after months of study induced sleep deprivation). Thoughts?

OMG how cool...I just graduated from law school and am studying for the bar too...and we are there at the same time (well, Playa no RPDC). We should totally get together for drinks one night.

First off, congrats! Sounds like you deserve & could use a great vacation! RPDC is one of our favorite resorts, hopefully it's everything you're looking for plus some.

As far as the best oceanview rooms go it really depends. A lot of people want to be in the rooms you mentioned because they have good views & are close to the main pool. We stayed in room 901 last year & loved it, it had a great direct oceanview & was close to the Coffee House & quiet pool. The quiet pool wasn't as boxed in last year as it is now but since we don't like facing the main pool we'd have zero issues staying in this room again.

Since you'll be there on a Thursday make sure you go to the Thursday evening art show on 5th Avenue. Last year there were dozens of local artists set up on 5th starting just North of Constituyentes (street that RPDC sits on).

Congrats to you as well Vermiciousknid!

Pre-Trip Report: Royal Playa Del Carmen August 8th-13th
INSTALLMENT #2

I have finally resurfaced from the three-day hell that was the Pennsylvania/New Jersey Bar Exam...but better yet...I'M 3 DAYS AWAY FROM MY TRIP TO RPDC! Only a few more days to prepare!

I realized that I must sit down and really research how we would get to and from the airport in Cancun. I knew I wanted a private transfer as my friends who just got back from Riviera Maya said it was an awful experience to sit in a van for an additional two hours after the flight dropping off others to their respective hotels I also knew that I wanted to have a transfer that would provide drinks for the ride (I waste no time on vacation!).

I had originally settled on Dream Days Transfers. They offer a private transfer in a Cadillac Escalade with the option to purchase beer or champagne. However, on second thought, did I really need an Escalade??? The idea seemed nice, but WAY too expensive. A round trip transfer to the RPDC would have cost $228, plus the costs of any drinks.

Luckily, I stumbled across this gem on Trip Advisor: Canada Transfers - Private Tours - Cancun - Reviews of Canada Transfers - Private Tours - TripAdvisor

After reading all of the amazing reviews, I went onto their website and was pleasantly surprised. A private roundtrip transfer to and from RPDC would only be $99! To top it off, they offer drink service in the van (coronas for only $1 each). I WAS SOLD! Booked them through Paypal and now have one less task on my pre-trip to do list.

Still debating on transportation from my house to the Philadelphia airport. We live in a part of the city where taxi service is less than reliable. You call. They may come. I have often taken uber to supplement poor cab service in our area, so I did consider it for this trip as well. For those of you unfamiliar with uber, it's a cell phone app that offers town car pickup for a slightly higher price than a cab:

Because Über has fixed rates for the airport and it will cost $55 for us, I am considering taking a gamble on a cab and using them as a last ditch resort.

With the transportation figured out I am setting my alarm to 3PM tomorrow when I *hopefully* get to log in and choose a room! Crossing my fingers for 337 or 338!

Getting any rain. I could not believe all the sun we had last month and hope for the same when we return at the end of the month.

Have fun!

I haven't seen any rain yet. I've been here in August the last 3 years and this is the hottest I've ever experienced. My husband took a taxi yesterday and the driver went to Playacar 2 instead of 1 by accident and he said it was pouring there, but I has sun my entire walk at the same time.

No rain.
It is super dry with short, isolated showers.
But, mostly no rain at all.

And guys, there is a transfer service provided by playa.info. The tab is at the top of the page. It's not only a great service but it also helps support this site.

ONLINE CHECK IN DAY IS HERE!!

I went online at the designated time, but unfortunately, the system was not working. I called the toll free number and after several transfers I was put in touch with a very nice man named Victor at the RPDC reservation desk. I explained that I would be checking in Friday and would like to chose a specific room and was unable to do so online. Victor told me that 337 and 338 were unavailable (darn!). However, Victor suggested 353, which he said would be the best view he had available.

I just got home, and attempted to log into the Royal's check in site. Not only did it work this time, but room 353 was reserved for us:

It looks like we will have a decent view of the pool and the ocean and now we are super excited!

Can't wait to wake up tomorrow and pack...
