Trip Report: The Royal Playa del Carmen August 2014

Just got home a few hours ago! Instead of packing, I decided to start my trip report Here we go...

Day #1

TODAY IS THE BIG DAY! It's finally time for our long awaited trip to Playa del Carmen. My alarm woke us up at 6am sharp:

My boyfriend and I had a cup of coffee in bed, got dressed, then it was off to the airport! Our flight was departing at 9:45. The night before our friend who travels often gave us the number of his cabbie. I called for a cab to arrive at 7am, and they were there right on time! We arrived at the airport around 7:30. I was super impressed that TSA allowed me to bring these in my carry on baggage:

We got through security so quickly that we had time to sit down for a nice breakfast. Our flight was on time and in less than 4 hours we landed at CUN!

First stop was Duty Free because my boyfriend had to have his cigarettes:

Mexico is VERY CLEAR on their cigarette warning labels... They also have super cheap cigarettes. He still got them:

After our duty free purchase (which oddly took about 20 minutes to be rung up) we headed through the doors of the exit. I loved the bar outside:

SO HAPPY TO BE HERE!

As promised, a representative from Canada Transfer was waiting for us at the exit with our name on a sign. His name was Elias and he was super friendly! He took my bag and escorted us to our ride:

Our driver was Jose. He greeted us with cold towels and once we got into the van we had ice cold beers waiting for us. Awesome.

Our SO HAPPY TO BE IN MEXICO FACES:

Once we got to the resort we were immediately escorted to a private checkin closer to the COBA building.

Even though we finished checkin at 2:40, we were not permitted to have possession of our room keys until 3PM. So off to Pelicanos we went for lunch! Our first drinks in paradise:

After reading all of the amazing trip reports on this site, I knew what I had to order. FLANK STEAK!

Once we finished eating, we grabbed our room keys and went to check out our suite. It was gorgeous as expected:

So thrilled that we were able to choose suite 353. The VIEW:

The balcony of this suite is a little smaller than the others, but still worth it. There is a hammock, but also smaller than the hammocks on the other balconies. Boyfriend couldn't quite figure out how to use it:

After we checked out the digs, my boo suggested that we order a bottle of sparkling wine and jump in the hot tub. It was lovely:

I should note that before we were able to use the jacuzzi, I actually had to clean it. It was left dirty by a previous guest and I guess housekeeping overlooked it.

After a soak in the jacuzzi we took a quick walk on the beach and then headed to the pool. Drink service was with Eva. It was a little slow, but she was really nice. My boyfriend ordered a piņa coloda and said it was the best he ever had. I stuck with mango tangos!

Afterwards, we headed to dinner at Asiana. Sorry. I neglected to take pictures of the food, but I did remember to snap a selfie!

To start I ordered the Thai beef salad and spring rolls for appetizer. Did. Not. Disappoint. My boyfriend ordered the wonton soup as an appetizer. He said it was good, but different. For an entree I got the mixed tempenyaki. It came with shrimp, beef and chicken vegetables with a side of fried rice. I LITERALLY INHALED IT. Boyfriend got the duck and he said it was also good.

After dinner we went to the cigar bar. My boyfriend bought a Cuban and a handrolled Mexican. We sat outside with the cigars and champagne then headed back to the room around midnight to prepare for our FIRST FULL DAY ON THE RESORT TOMORROW!

DAY 2

It's our first full day on the resort! Both of us got up early around 6:30. We like coffee in bed so we ordered a pot through room service. We drank it on our lovely balcony and watched the sun rise. I snapped some beautiful pics of the resort in the process:

The "pool chair game" was definitely in effect on this resort, so after watching the sun rise we reserved the chairs we wanted to use for the day. Then we decided to take a walk on the beach. The beach definitely has an objectionable smell to it, but it was quite beautiful:

My love loves the beach <3

The signs are correct though. Definitely very rocky.

After our walk on the beach we came back to the room and got dressed for breakfast. I was super stoked to wear my new dress and hat!

We decided to eat breakfast at the buffet at Spice Restaurant. The food was DELICIOUS! I had scrambled eggs, bacon, home fries and fruit, with a mimosa made with the best OJ I've ever had. After breakfast it was time for the pool. This is probably one of the only pool pics I took, because I just got a new iPhone after accidentally smashing the old one

I wanted to continue to drink mimosas at the pool, but unfortunately the pool bar apparently does not have real orange juice. Around 11:30 it started to pour, so we headed to Tapas Pinxtos for lunch. Shot of the rain from the restaurant:

My boyfriend and I are TACO FANATICS. We probably eat tacos 3-4 times a month at two authentic places that we found in Philadelphia. Coming to Mexico we knew tacos would be a big lunch fixture for us. I had read a lot of reviews on Trip Advisor that people did not enjoy this restaurant. I don't know why. The tacos were simply amazing amazing. Started off with two fish and a pork:

The tacos were so good that I ended up going back for another pork and one chorizo potato. While eating at Tapas we met a very nice couple from Arkansas. They invited us to the beach with them tomorrow.

After lunch, sun came back out. Back to pool. It was extremely HOT. I had some more drinks and fell asleep. By the time I woke up I was not feeling well. My boyfriend suggested that I go back to room and lay down, but I said we could go lay in a beach bed. An hour later and still not feeling well I decided to go to the room and lay down. My boyfriend walked me back, then went to the pool. Before I laid down I looked over the balcony and for the first time noticed how much fun he was having and it put a smile on my face even though I was feeling crappy.

I went to bed and woke up around 6. I felt bad about wasting vacation away in bed, so I suggested we walk into the city and shop, then come back and have dinner on the resort. My boyfriend was super tired and suggested that I call room service for a snack and lay down first. I ordered steak nachos with extra jalapeņos and cheese (not on the menu), and a Caesar salad. Both were yum:

Unfortunately, after we ate, both of us fell asleep. We were supposed to go to town to meet up with Vermiciousknid at Beer Bucket, but I still wasn't feeling well and he seemed so tired. Kinda bummed I wasted half a day in paradise but the rest was good to have after a stressful few months of studying for and taking the bar. Can't wait to see what we get into tomorrow!

Don't feel bad!!! You didn't "waste" half a day....you're recovering, relaxing, and resting...whatever that means when you need it. Obviously, you have time to recup!!!

Great start! I used to let feeling bad on vacation bother me/us but now I embrace it. A nap in paradise is better than a nap at home!

I'm craving flank steak nachos & mango tangos now

Would you describe that as a "stench"?

Great start. I like the food photos especially.

We've got almost three months to get through before we return to the Royal. I'll be eagerly looking forward to the rest of your report.

DAY 3

After a 12 hour nap I woke up refreshed...hehehe. It's 6:30am so it's time for coffee and surfing the internet in bed.

It was our plan to go into the city for massages today but my boyfriend got a heat rash on his back so we decided to put it off until tomorrow (my birthday!) to see if it cleared up. I reserved pool seats early and noticed that hotel staff were reserving seats for guests. A woman working for the hotel had a piece of paper and was going around to specific chairs and putting towels down. I thought that was weird.

We decided to have breakfast at El Mediterraneo today as opposed to Spice. No food pics. Ugh. The custom made omelettes were nice to have. I had bacon, spinach, onions, tomatoes, mushrooms, and extra cheese. My boyfriend did bacon and suasage.

After breakfast we took our first walk into town. I was determined to find a pool floatie. Hey! I didn't know they had stores like this here!

I also didn't know you could buy any prescription drug you wanted over the counter

Here are my favorite pictures from our walk:

"Lucky Luciano's" Pizza

It was BLAZING hot so our walk was short live, but mission accomplished! We found the cadillac of pool floaties. A chaise lounge with a head rest and a cup holder! Very happy girl:

Because of the heat, the plan for the rest of the day was to swim in the pool. I started out with mojitos. After lunch (Tapas Pinxtos again for tacos!), I switched to mango tangos. At some point at the pool, I retreated to the room for a bathroom break. I looked out of the balcony and saw my boyfriend guarding my prized possession:

We met up with our new friends Tammy and her husband from Arkansas and some folks from New Jersey! We were all having such a good time chatting that we stayed in the pool until 6:30.

We had dinner reservations at 7:30 at Il Pescatore, which is located at the Gran Porto Real (RPDC's sister resort across the street). At check-in the concierge recommended we try this place for good Italian. Let's just say, if you're from a town that actually has good Italian, you may want to stay clear of here. We both sat down and had a glass of the house red wine. I didn't think it was too bad, but then again, I drink the cheapest wine I can find at home.

For an appetizer, I ordered a caprese salad, which was bland. My boyfriend ordered antipasta and did not like it. For an entree, I ordered fettuccine, which I thought was fine. However, my boyfriend ordered lasagna, had one bite, and refused to eat the rest. We also split the steak, and it was horrible. It taste like the salisbury steak they serve in middle school cafeterias. Awful. Oh well. After dinner pic:

It was disco night tonight in the lobby. However, my boyfriend's back was badly sunburned from a day our full day at the pool. After dinner his skin hurt so badly that we stopped at the gift shop for aloe and then went to bed. The towel animal housekeeping left cheered him up a bit:

Sorry for the lack of pictures today. There will be more in the next installment.

TOMORROW I CELEBRATE MY BIRTHDAY ON THE RESORT!!
