It's so hard writing about the restaurants because its so subjective, and you never know when its just an off day for a kitchen. The kids raved about the coconut shrimp though, and even though I didn't taste it, they have eaten their body weight in coconut shrimp, so I think they may qualify as experts!

Loving this report, if I can't be there in person this week at least I can still enjoy the beauty of the area.

Ok, so funny story. After we walked back to the condo I went straight to the beach and grabbed loungers while the rest of the family went inside to change. The kids came out. I waited…and waited…where is Dave?? He shows up about an hour later. He was getting our beach cooler ready and had pulled two bottle of rum out of the freezer and set them on the counter. One was our standard trusty bottle of Havana, and the other was a bottle of Flor de Cana. He went in the other room to change and heard a huge explosion. He came back out and the Flor de Cana had exploded on the counter…glass everywhere…rum everywhere. I guess it was the temperature change, but we always store our rum in the freezer in Playa and never had this happen before. And the worst part, besides losing the rum, was that it reeked, like rubbing alcohol, for the 2 days. I will stick with the Havana think you very much.

Dinner tonight was an epic failure…and it sucks because this was my favorite place last time. We decided to try the newly redone La Fragrata. Asthetically I preferred it prior to the renovation. I thought it was quaint and lovely, now it looks just like every place on 5th. I know fish tacos are probably not what most people choose from their menu at dinnertime, but they were the best I had ever had and I wanted the boy to actually get his fish tacos. The prices have gone up, slightly for the fish tacos, but quite a bit for the shrimp tacos. My shrimp tacos were decent, but lacked the attention to detail that they had in the past. There was little seasoning and the dressed greens were soggy and the tortillas were not the same as they had been in the past. I was surprised when Dave literally spit out his fish taco. I tasted his…gross. The fish tasted old, not bad, but not fresh…but in a few spots it tasted plain old bad. The batter for the taco had no flavor at all and for some reason was not the same batter than was on my shrimp tacos and it had no seasoning at all and was a soggy mess. You can see the difference visually in the pictures. No one ate anything and when we told the waitress that the fish tasted bad, she pretty much just ignored us. The caprese salad was delicious though. I don’t know, maybe an off day, but service was all over the place and the lack of attention to our concerns about the fish really turned me off. I would love to hear that this was a fluke, so let me know if you have had a great meal here recently.

Tuesday

Time to meet my mom and ditch the kids…finally! We met at Kaxapa Factory, which has not disappointed me yet….and will not disappoint this time either. I don’t know that they are lacking for business or great reviews, but trust me on this, if you haven’t been yet…GO!!!

I can’t be sure, but I think they upgraded their furniture and put of a nice awning since our last visit, which is very nice in the hot sun.

I think this was a new item. I don’t remember what it was, but it was fried and had cheese and was mostly devoured before I could snap a picture. They have the best sauces too.

Don't think I've ever really been disappointed by any of their food, but it is unreal how great those tacos are.

we will too! Good thing I ordered a new Mapchick map.

That is too bad about La Fragata. Our last trip we ate there two or three times, we LOVED it. I hate it when restaurants renovate and think they can then get away with skimping on food taste and service and slide by on the basis of the decor and looks. The whole package is sometimes hard to find!

But we will likely give it a shot and then I will give a review.

Those are our two favourite rums too, Flor de Cana and Havana. I will make sure not to put either in the freezer!

We'll be getting into Playa Nov. 1.... maybe we'll bump into you on your last night?? I am hoping there will be some Day of the Dead festivities somewhere.

I am really enjoying your trip report. Thanks so much for posting and of course, all the beautiful photos!

I am horrified to hear of your experience at La Fragata. I too LOVE their fish tacos and they were one of the best things I have eaten in Playa. I really hope your recent experience was just a fluke. I don't understand why renovating should result in their food going downhill, unless they spent so much on the renovation project that they had to fire the chef and hire someone for less money!!!

God bless you for going in the summer. I've been to the region twice in August and let me just say....NEVER AGAIN. The only time I ever came close to fainting in my life was in Mexico in August. I came this.close. I spent the entire trips wiping sweat off me and trying to find shade.

ETA: Totally agree re: Kaxapa Factory...not to be missed!!! And the owner is about the most delightful man you will ever meet. And we too weren't blown away by La Mission. It was just okay. Like your kids, I am crazy about coconut shrimp but unlike your kids, I didn't think they were so great at La Mission. They were just okay to us. Pretty presentation but a bit dry and a bit lacking in flavor.

We had the same experience with the fish at La Tarraya on our last trip. Plus the service was a little over bearing (you, no how they try to "busk" you in off the beach) and lack luster at the same time.

I suppose we might give em one more try in October. maybe....

After lunch, Dave, my mom, and the kids took a taxi back to the condo to get their luggage. I decided to walk. Let me just say, that being a female alone walking down 5th was the best walk down 5th ever. No one offered me any drugs. No one gave my any catchy lines. Literally the only people who spoke to me were the massage ladies. It was nice. Nothing much to say in this post, I just used the time to take lots of pictures.
