But why is the rum gone? (August 2014 trip report)

Time to get this trip report started. My picture will probably still be uploading for the rest of the day, but I might as well start out with some of my favorite taco related images(because I have a one track mind).

Friday- Day 1

Trading 1 bracelet for another. I just took the bar exam on Tuesday and Wednesday. Oh, you didn’t know, well that would be a miracle because it's the only thing I have talked about since I graduated from law school in May…like 24 hours a day non-stop obsessive thoughts about the bar exam (My apologies to my friends and family). One night, I dreamt that I finally understood the rule against perpetuities (you law folks will understand). It was a shining moment, unfortunately the bar exam was hard, really hard (see you again in February Bar examiners!) and I never had any real time to get excited or plan for this trip.

This is another trip with the children (what were we thinking?) First, let me lay out the time line of the trip for you. We arrived on Friday August 1 and the kids stayed with us at Xaman Ha until Tuesday August 5th. On Tuesday my mom came into town from The Grand Luxxe (at the Grand Mayan) and took the children out there with her and my Dad. On Sunday August 10th, Dave flew home and I went out to Grand Luxxe and stayed with them until Friday August 15th. This was my longest trip at two weeks, and I found it to be the perfect length of time, even though I would happily stay in Playa forever…I never miss home.

We usually have a 5 or 6am flight, but got lucky with a slightly later 8:30 flight this time on Southwest and Airtran. Of course, we still had to get up at 4am. Here we are, bleary eyed, at our usual airport breakfast at Michael Symon’s Bar Symon.

Really? 6am and you need to take my picture, you wretched woman?? Luckily, he loves me and is starting to get used to a camera following him everywhere he goes after 5 years. The girl child is revolting and pretty much closes her eyes in every picture…on purpose. Brat.

Breakfast sandwich with hot sauce. I barely ate my food, which is odd because I have been shoving junk food into my face faster than I could think about for the past month, thus the 15 pounds I gained and the reason I am in very few pictures. Lol.

Southwest doesn’t allow you to pre-check for international flight if you booked through AirTran, so non of us sat together on the first leg of the flight, so I got to enjoy watching Broadchurch in peace. We had a long layover in Atlanta because after my disaster with USAir last trip, I wasn’t gonna risk a short layover traveling with kids and we all had a carry-on suitcase. I did check one bag though, which I never do because of many bad experiences, but with the length of the trip I knew it would be cheaper to pay the bag fee than to buy sunscreen for 4 people in town. I guess that AirTran has adopted Southwest’s 2 free bags policy though, because the bag was free and we all checked on the way home. I was relieved when my bag made it to Cancun, because like I said, I have a history of bad luck.

I didn’t even get the chance to take my usual cheesy “arrival selfie” because Canada Transfers was there and immediately took us to our shuttle. Dave hadn’t even finished his cigarette when the van was all loaded and ready to go.

Ok, coming up…condo arrival and my children get their first sunburn.

Heading out for a bit, more when I return. I’m trying this new thing where I actually cook dinner at home (its been more than a year since I’ve cooked a meal…odd for a former chef) so I gotta make the run across town to Whole Foods.

Don't get too excited...there are only a few new places. We quickly discovered that Xaman Ha was a lot farther of a walk in the scorching heat than we anticipated, so we didn't get out quite as much as we usually do.

The Condo…room 7108 at Xaman Ha. We were very happy with everything in the condo. Well equipped with everything we needed. Only issue was that the washing machine wasn’t hooked up. They fixed it later in the week, but it still took 4 hours to partially dry clothes, so pretty much ineffective. We rented through Rentals Your Way and they sent us the passcode to the lockbox at booking time, so we didn’t even have to bother checking in or anything. They do require a bracelet for the pool and beach, which we got the next day. Housekeeping was every other day.

You really cannot ask for a better beach than this. Loungers were plentiful and we never had any issues finding seats on the beach or by the pool. The pool was deeper than the usual waist deep pools I see so often. The water in the ocean was so clear that you can see your feet clearly in chest deep water.

Dinner time! It’s our first time venturing out from the condo and I already hate the location. It is far. I curse every single person who swore it was a 3 minute walk to 5th. It’s not. It’s easily 10 minutes just to get around Playacar Palace. Then, once you find the shortcut to 5th, rather than going on 10th, you still have to walk through the never ending maze of the plaza by the pier. I’m used to walking a lot in Playa, but If I ever stay here again, I am renting a car.

DSC_0014 by rumseywb, on Flickr

Pig squirrel…that's what we call them. They creep me out, especially when walking by the ravine in front of Playacar Palace where they hide and you can hear tons of them, but not see them.

We decided to try TaconTenedor for dinner based on the reviews from Mr Yucatan and we were not disappointed. We had passed this place on Constituyentes on our last trip, but had already eaten.

I can’t recall what they tacos were, one was octopus and the other, not sure, but Dave loved them.

DSC_0025 by rumseywb, on Flickr

Mine! One was shrimp with bacon, and the other was shrimp rajas con crema. The shrimp were small, but delicious.

DSC_0026 by rumseywb, on Flickr

Plentiful toppings, and I liked that they keep them cold and covered.

DSC_0027 by rumseywb, on Flickr

DSC_0028 by rumseywb, on Flickr

Fish tacos. I ordered the tempura shrimp, but the fish were better, because the shrimp were really small again.

DSC_0029 by rumseywb, on Flickr

Wee shrimp tacos. They were good, but I can get fried shrimp tacos elsewhere for the same price with more filling.

DSC_0030 by rumseywb, on Flickr

On our walk back, we stopped and ordered some ice cream while we listened to Mike and Victor across the street at Fah.

Saturday

Today started out rough. Iím lucky my family didnít kill me. I really need to start keeping a notebook again, so I remember what I did each day. The previous night, we settled onto the balcony with a few Havana and Cokes, but we ran out of Coke. Then I got a message reminding me of karaoke at Umma Gumma, so we sprinted down there and sang some karaoke with Rick and Sue. When I say ďsang karaokeĒ I mean, they all sang and I drank. I already have blisters. Its nice that the kids are old enough to stay home alone for a bit and they were going to bed, but donít worry, they can text me if they need anything.

In the morning we went to the food trucks. Ok, we tried to go to the food truck, but made it to Oxxo to grab some water when I realized I left my wallet at the condo. Back we goÖand walking, walking, walking. They hate me so much. Its about a billion degrees out and we are dying. I must have been in a foul mood by then because I didnít take any pictures of the food, but my cochinita torta was awesome as usual. And then I dropped the only spear of pineapple from my daughterís fruit bag on the ground. I had managed a small bite first, and seriously contemplated eating it off the groundÖit was so good. I only eat fruit when Iím hungover, so lets assume I had a hangover.

Some crappy iphone beach pictures. Its too bright and I canít see my screen to straighten the horizon line, and it will forever bug me, but apparently not enough to actually edit and straighten it.

We all got sunburned. I am obsessive about my sunscreen usage. We applied, we waited, we reapplied, but we are no match for the brutal sun. Dave even got burned on his shoulders through his t-shirt. My children have never been sunburned before. They then whined about their sunburn almost non-stop until we left them with my mom on Tuesday. Iím not inviting them on the next trip. Frankly, they are lucky I let them live! Kids these days.

And her sunburn wasnít even that bad. Mine was the worst. Let me give you a piece of advice. If you bring multiple swimsuit and are pale like me, wear the lowest cut one on the first day, so you donít have to spend the rest of your trip trying to tan (or alternatively applying bronzer) to the portion of top boob that is still ghostly white and shows in every outfit, that was covered by that one swimsuit. That had been my public service announcement for the day.

We met my parents for dinner at Don Chendo. The fabulous reviews are warranted. I donít even like pizza particularly, and it was probably the best meal of the trip. I have already relayed the story in the Don Chendo thread, but I will again rave about how sweet and wonderful Russell is. My Dad had Parkinsons and is in a wheelchair. They needed to go to Mega after dinner and they planned to get a taxi there and have it wait to take them back to their resort because there are generally no wheelchair accessible sidewalks in that part of town. We waited about 15 minutes and no taxiís came by. Russell pushed my Dadís wheelchair down the street, with Dave in front blocking traffic, the entire way to Mega. Totally above and beyond, and I cannot thank him enough.

Ok, back to the food. We ordered caprese salad, meatball pizza, buffalo pizza, Hawaiian pizza, and the brownie for dessert. OMG OMG OMG. The meatball pizza was amazing. The buffalo was a special I believe, but deliciousÖlike buffalo chicken dip in a pizza and somehow they managed to make it incredibly rich, yet light at the same time. I donít even know where to start with the brownie. I had heard it was the best brownie ever, whatever, I donít even like chocolate. It was the best brownie ever!!!!!!

Forgot about the garlic bread. Yeah, we devoured that too.

Mega. My sonís favorite showÖon ketchup. Itís not Heinz though, so Iím not buying it. My local grocery store just started carrying the Heinz Jalepeno ketchupÖthat's good stuff.

Iím a sucker for cute packaging.
