contentinal plaza playacar

I have a time share at the contentinal and recieved a letter stating that they have new owners. I now read that they are closing until late Dec for remodling. Does anyone have any more information on this?

continental plaza update

My wife and I returned from pdc yesterday (4/21). We stayed there and were told there are new owners I think "Real" properties. They will be remodeling in the near future but I did not ask when.

As you probably know, you can't beat the location to PDC proper and $ .
The biggest concern we had was cleanliness of the bathroom. Seems to be a lot of mold in the shower area etc. Only other major concern was the firmness of the bed. VV hard. Also, if you do not bring a clock you will have to use your watch. Also, you will need to request a wake up call BEFORE they close the front desk or you are out of luck.

We ate the breakfast buffet most mornings ($10 usd) For the most part, it was a 7 on a 1-10 scale. If you like coffee you must ask for it often and you need to ask for hot coffee! I can assure you they know which warmer is keeping it warm and which ones are not.

The pool was ok but not as clean as we remember it last time we visited. Also, it was VV cold!

I know it sounds like I do not like CPlaza but I do, again simply because of the $ and location. We like to take several trips to pdc each year and find this is the way to get it done.

Anyway, I gave more info than you requested and really did not answer your question. You might want to call the "Real" properties in pdc and cancun to get the update on cplaza.

Have a safe trip!

Thanks Clif
We've had a time share at the contentinal since the eariy 1900's and do love the location. Our kids now use the time share since they like the pools for their kids and we prefer to stay at the ****** condos since the beach front units are quiet, right on the beach, reasonable and in the center of town.
We were there in Feb and the kids used two rooms at the contentinal and really enjoyed it. The food is ok for breakfast but I would not eat there for lunch or dinner--but then, Playa has so many great resturants in walking distance from both the contentinal and the ****** that eating is both reasonable and enjoyable.
Can't wait to see what they do with the contentinal with new owners

Bill

Damn, I didn't even know they have been around that long much less did a time share then! And you to still be getting around a 100+ years later. That must have been some sweet deal you worked.

So the Continental Plaza is now a Real Group property, really? Had no idea. I'm out of it.

That means (impending tidbit alert!) that the only two beach hotels in Playa with elevators are now run by the same people! At least if the info I got when checking on this several months ago for an elderly woman with access issues was correct then and is not now outdated. (Wondering about Reef Coco Beach...) That turned up only the Gran Porto Real and the Continental Plaza, in that category.

I read on another board that it's actually the Palace group that bought the Continental. They also bought a hotel in Cancun and another on Cozumel . The names didn't mean anything to me.

The information we got with the time share notice was to contact
BAHIA DEL ESPIRITU SANTO ESQ ABRAIRA DE ABRAIRA
FRACCIONAMIENTO PLAYACAR
They have an office in Houston, TX
SIDEK SITUR

Does this help in solving who brought this property?

It could very well be Palace Resorts. It was very difficult to understand their span/english. They stated that "20 or so from a sister hotel was coming over to Cplaza due to an overbooking" I thought they stated the sister was a real property.

Anyway, If anyone knows a time frame for shut down I really need to know too.

My wife is taking her mom, sister and others down to pdc May 1 and she was considering cp again.

The dates I saw for closing were August 29 to December 23, 2004. The hotels are supposed to be open again on December 24, 2004

I am very interested to know who really did buy the Continental.

That place is showing its age, it was actually completed in the mid 1980s; not the early 1900s as some guests may claim based on the condition of the plumbing.

On March 12, 2004 the Palace Resorts and Real Resorts confirmed that they would be entering a joint venture in the purchase of 8 hotels from Grupo Sidek, S.A. de C.V. The Palace Resorts will take over the Sierra Cancun, the Continental Plaza Playacar, the Plaza Las Glorias Cozumel, and the Sierra Nuevo Vallarta. The Real Resorts will take over the Continental Villas de Cancun, the Sierra de Manzanillo, the Continental Plaza de Ixtapa, and the Plazas Las Glorias de Los Cabos. An article announcing the transfer of these properties can be read on the Por Esto! web site.

At one time the Grupo Sidek, owned over 400 properties in Mexico. After running into financial difficulties in the late 1990s, the group was forced to restructure and sell off it's assets to pay off creditors. The 8 hotels that it is transferring to the Palace Resorts and Real Resorts are the only properties that remain from this liquidation. Grupo Sidek had originally contracted with AMX Resort Holdings, LLC., a subsidiary of Steadfast Properties & Development, Inc. to purchase these 8 hotels, however, in April 2001 AMX-Steadfast defaulted in it's obligation to acquire the hotels from Grupo Sidek (click here for the April 2001 press release in Timeshare Beat). The Palace Resorts and Real Resorts have been in negotiations to purchase these 8 hotels for the last 3 years.

Thanks Denise. I did all kinds of web searches myself. It is clear I will never attain forum Goddess status.

I have first hand knowledge that the Continental Plaza Playacar will be turned over completely by December to the Palaces. I am told it will be 100% All Inclusive once the transformation and remodeling are completed. The unconfirmed name will be Playacar Palace.

Does anyone have an idea how the contentinal time share owners will be handled since it is going from non AI to AI. We do not like the AI concept since Playa has so many great places to eat and drink. The memo from the new owners said they will honor all time share contacts.
