Yes That was an amazing sight (not welcome but amazing considering how quiet it always is there).
Wherever you go during Semana Santa its horribly busy.
I would not want to be staying in a hotel during that time as they are all at full capacity which means busy beach, lounger bagging at ridiculous hours to get one saved, q's for food etc. Too many people. Unpleasant imho!

If you stay in a private villa you will be least affected as you have your own private space and can choose where and when you go to eat, shop, hang out. I would think Tulum perhaps may be quieter only because they don't have as many accommodation cabanas there to start with to make it busy!

So did these crowds continue the week after Easter, as well, or did it become more 'normal' or tolerable?

I ruled out travel the week before and including Easter and luckily our break is after that. I can travel Mon-Mon and avoid the airport on Sat/Sun too.

This forum is fantastic! I'm so glad there is a place for this discussion and it's helping a lot.

Puerto Morelos? Is that better? Or crowded too and less able to absorb the 'extra' visitors?

I'v avoided Easter for the last 2 yrs not solely for these reasons as i own there and can avoid said crowds if i want, but for other reasons including flights as expensive as Xmas! If you can go the week after - that is much better and yes, the crowds do subside compared to the week before but there will still be residuals! Easter sunday/monday are basically a nightmare! (imho) If you really want to be safe, wait another week or really quiet? End April/May - best time of year really. Flights will likely be cheaper too.

Cant comment on Puerto Morelos but likely all the same but on a lesser scale as its much smaller. Stick to a villa for the most privacy and quiet wherever you go (except Tulum where it is cabanas mostly anyway). If you havnt ventured to Tulum before - you MUST take at least 1 day to spend on the beach. Its heaven

Semana Santa is the week leading up to Easter Sunday. The week that follows Easter Sunday is Semana de Pascua. School children in Mexico usually get both weeks off, however adults who work will often get off just Jueves y Viernes Santo, which is to say the Thursday & Friday of Semana Santa, leading up to the weekend of Easter.

Now, granted, a good number might get an additional day tacked on to that 4-day weekend, or who knows, maybe even the whole of Semana Santa, in some cases. Or they may well take some vacation days to combine with that 4-day weekend or something. But basically most people are back at work starting the day after Easter Sunday (even if their kids are still off).

So it will be less busy the week after Easter Sunday than leading up to it. However my reaction was still just like Susie's, in that I'm not sure why you would want to come during either of these periods if, as you say, you detest crowds and noise and so on. Seems like you'd do a lot better coming down, well, now, for example.

And so if this is your only vacation time and you want to come to this area, then you don't have much choice, right? I say go for it, because the week after won't be as bad as the week before. Renting something in Puerto Morelos would be lovely I bet. Playa is generally a bustling area, my last stay in town during high season found us going outside of town every day, to go to the beach. Xpu Ha, Tulum and Puerto Morelos. I told myself next family rental could very well be in PM, I enjoyed the lack of crowds. But even if you stay in Playa, or Playacar, it still won't be as bad the week after.

Oh yes then I'd generally agree. Just depends on how much constitutes a crowd and noise to you, and how accurate "detest" is to describe your reaction, I guess...

I detest crowds too but if I had just one vacation week for the year that worked for my family and I did want to go to Riviera Maya/Playa, I'd still go (even if I had to suck up a bit!). Better than staying home! But, there are other places to go, however my guess is that in general, it's going to be about the same in any warm weather vacation spot.

Shammy- your reasoning sounds like mine. We thought about other places, but vacation and relaxing have come to mean "Mexico" for us.

So...Puerto Morelos, it is. I found a house with a private pool, which we can do since my mom and sister will travel with us and contribute . If the crowds are annoying the first couple days, we will hibernate and relax at our pool and hire someone to cook or go to meals at 'off' times.

If it's so intolerable, well then we will know, but in spite of not wanting the crowds and noise, we still kept landing on Mexico as what we want (and this is our first trip to the Caribbean side) so, we will make the best of it, no matter what.

YAY! Now to book that house before someone else does!

Thanks everyone SO much for the honest and helpful insight!!

I think you'll be fine in PM. The (rude) kids from other areas of Mexico who invade during Semana Santa really stick mainly to Playa. PM is too laid back.

I posted requests for AI suggestions for family with teenagers in the AI thread but just curious since this discussion is going on here what are you thoughts of staying at an AI during Semana Santa? I believe the family asking me about AI's would probably be hitting that week since it is spring break for the local schools here? This will be their first trip to Mexico. Would you still avoid that week even in AI with plans of probably only leaving resort to go into Playa to just see what 5th avenue is about and possibly doing a Tulum and Beyond tour with playa.info?

Personally, I would ONLY stay at a remote, small AI anytime near Easter in Mexico anywhere. Remote and small enough that even though it will be likely be at capacity the beach won't be elbow to elbow people. As upscale as we can possibly afford would be another caveat- we have been at three star Mexican hotels over peak weeks where families of 8 or so would squeeze into one hotel room and the buffet would run out of food by 7 pm. No more!

Been on city and town beaches in Mexico enough times at xmas and Easter to know it is way too crowded for us.

I personally would avoid AI's at Semana Santa like the plague. Its a gorgeous time of year where everyone wants to be - locals and tourists.

Have had many friends stay at them while we are in our house. They describe the horrors of having to get up early to grab a chair by the pool or the beach, if you want one for the day. Q's for food and drink, running out of food, unable to get in to restaurants of choice for dinner. Just Too many people. Crowded beaches. The hotels are at full or almost full capacity. The bigger the hotel, the bigger the crowds. If you like that, then go ahead. If you don't, don't be surprised!

one more question (for now)

We are going to stay in Puerto Morelos.

Does anyone know or have an informed opinion...

Will the Cancun airport be busier Easter Sunday or the next day, Monday?

Ready to book flights and that is our last decision- would LOVE to get an extra day by coming Sunday...

It's been years since I was a travel agent but based on that and my own travel experience, I'd say that - coming IN to Mexico - either day would be about the same. Now Saturday, or even Friday, I believe you could expect it to be much heavier but I don't think there'd be much difference between Sunday and Monday, so take the extra day if you can!
