Mother-Daughter trip to Iberostar Tucan

My daughter and I just returned from the Iberostar Tucan/Quetzel. We were there for a week Oct 27-Nov 3rd 2014. This was my 6thth stay at this hotel and 9th to the Iberostar Chain. My very favorite “over-the-top” resort is the Iberostar Grand, but this is my all time fav “go-to” resort. This was a sort of college grad present for my daughter. We flew out of Toronto, instead of Detroit this time because it was way cheaper paying in Canadian money. I didn’t mind the 4 hour drive there, but coming home by myself in the middle of the night was a different story.
I'll try to upload pics as I go.
First things first......our prevacation pedicures....

I'm off to the Iberostar Tucan for my 1st time in early December. I've stayed around the area 12 or so times since our first trip in 2004 and love the beach.

I look forward to seeing some pics. In the meantime I hope you don't mind me asking a couple of questions like dress code in the restaurants and sadly, wifi, throughout the hotel.

We left our house at 3am and arrived by 630 am at the Direct Flight long term parking lot in Toronto. Check-in with Sunwing was a hassel. We had upgraded to Premium Elite in order to sit at front of the plane and of course the extra 10kg of luggage. We now had 30kg instead of 20.When we checked in, what they didn’t tell us was that your carry-on could not be more than 5kg.Well, my roll on bag was at least 3 kg by itself, so I kept having to take things out and transfer to my checked bag.It ended up I only had a couple tops, a bathing suit and a pair of flip flops left in the carry on, so it wasn’t worth it at all to even carry one.The guy checking us in didn’t have a clue.A lot of people were upset because they had to transfer items. Finally after check-in, we easily cleared security and were in the lounge.Security at Pearson is nothing like security in Detroit or any US airports I have flown out of.Way more thorough in the US.One thing I liked at Pearson, is that there are ipad stations at everyseat with free internet and where you can actually order food and drinks directly to where you are sitting.
We boarded the plane and were sitting in the second row. Soon we were off and were greated with our free Sunwing “champane welcome”. Sunwing has this treat and a free hot meal and wine. (also free with your meal).

First to board the plane in Toronto!!

Hi David, ask away.. No dress code pretty much at restaurants anymore. No long pants are required. There were plenty of people wearing shorts and open toed shoes such as flip flops. Wi-Fi for 7 days was around $38, but if you go by the fence along side the Sandos resort, you can pick up theirs for free. We stayed in building 11 and in between the buildings you can also pick it up.

Jorge from Canada Transfers was waiting as soon as we landed. He had our hot towels and cold beers waiting. I love taking the private transfers instead of waiting around for everyone else to board a bus. We actually came through another terminal because we flew with a charter. I like the other terminal better when we fly with Delta.

Soon, we arrived at the Playacar welcome sign!!! Pretty soon we will be on the beach. I can already hear my beach chair calling to me.

Check-in went very smoothly. Ivan was our check-in guy and was expecting us with nice punch.

Ivan is in the background getting everything ready for our room, 1149. I look like I'm already tanned, but I didn't pre-tan this time. I'm olive complextion, and I think all the drinks I had that morning have been getting to me!

Here is the resident macaw parrot in the lobby. Friendly, but don't get to close to his beak....

since it was only 230pm, our room wasn't ready yet. We had lunch in the main buffet and then came back and it was ready. We were off with the bell boy and our luggage.

This is what the typical building hallway looks like. There are 3 floors.

Below, is what it looks like in between the buildings. YOu can see the Sandos resort in the background. We stood just in between and were able to pick up the Sandos free wifi. We can even get it it we stood on the hallway balcony overlooking this courtyard. If you had a room facing the Sandos resort, you can probably pick it up from your room. We were facing the inside of our resort facing the pool so couldn't pick up from inside our room. I pretty much go "off the grid" when on vacation, but it was nice to Skype my husband and other kids after the beach on our way to the room, and after our dinner. I didn't miss having internet, it was a vacation from that as well.

We had a double room. Its pretty standard and nothing to fancy, but it serves the purpose. We're only in there to sleep. The beds are on the firm side, but comfortable. The mattress is on concrete slabs which makes a bit firm. You can ask for egg crate foam to make it softer, but we didn't mind at all. The sheets were clean and crisp and room spotless with towel art on the bed. The lowest air temp is set to 20 degrees, but we called the front desk and they sent out someone to adjust the air con to a lower 18 degrees. I love the room cold when we get in from the beach. They also brought extra blankets. Everything, was "no problem Senora".

Here is a view from our room. We were in building 11, which is second from the beach, behind the beach grill and pool hut.

Here are some pics of the beautiful beach and pool. The beach is completely restored and huge. Very soft white sand and crystal turquoise warm water. Its a shame that about every 3 feet you walked if you really looked you will see cigarette butts. I have no problem with people smoking on the beach, but PICK UP YOUR BUTTS PEOPLE!!. Its so disrespectful and disgusting to leave butts laying around.
There were a ton of chairs. Always some available. If you couldn't get a palapa, you could always get a sun umbrella from the towel hut. These were free. I've never seen so many available chairs before.

Here is the beach grill. It has a shade tarp now. Excellent food here!! Serves a smaller breakfast than the main buffet and a big lunch. The soup here is awesome!!! I ate some everyday. The grilled fish they serve everyday is so good as well. The quality of the food at this whole resort is a 10/10. We never had a problem with anything related to food. There is also a grill outside that has hotdogs and hamburgers, fries, fried onions, and condiments, as well as a soft serve ice cream station. The small beach buffet also is the Tropical Restaurant at night. This is the only restaurant we did not eat at. We were able to get 4 dinner reservations. I reserved the 3 via email before we got there, and called the third night we were there to see if they had any Mexican spots available, which they did. You are allowed 3 reservations for 7 night stay, but they will let you have more if there are spots available.
