New Riu Lupita to open in November
Just an FYI for those of you who may be interested. The Riu chain is set to open another hotel in Playa Del Carman this November. Information about new Riu Lupita is very limited, but I was able to find the address. The new Riu Lupita is located at:
Manzano 20 Lote Hotelero 1 Playa Del Carmen Since this is the exact same address as the old Occidental Caribbean Village Playacar, I'm assuming they have purchased this hotel. The set up appears the same as the Tequila since the hotel is 1.5 miles from the beach. But, it is nestled on a golf course for those of you looking for a golf get-away. Based upon address numbers and an aerial photo I have of the hotel strip in Playa, it looks like the new Riu Lupita will be physically close to the Riu Tequila, but I have no idea whether or not it will be close enough to share facilities. The new Riu Lupita is listed as a "hotel"; not a palace or club hotel. Anyway, I just thought some of you might be interested. Here's the news bulletin I received from Riu: The hotel chain will then own nine properties in Mexico. RIU Hotels & Resorts (www.riu.com) has acquired its fifth property in Playa del Carmen (Mexican Caribbean) the newly named Riu Lupita. It is a 4-star hotel located in Playa del Carmen featuring 300 guestrooms and an impressive 25,000-sq metre garden. The hotel will go through complete renovation in the coming months, and will reopen its doors in November offering the "All Inclusive" plan. Including Riu Lupita the Spanish hotel chain will operate nine properties in Mexico: Five in Playa del Carmen (by opening order: Riu Yucatan, ClubHotel Riu Tequila, Riu Palace Mexico, Riu Playacar and Riu Lupita); three in Cancun (Riu Cancun, Riu Caribe and Riu Palace Las Americas) and one in Puerto Vallarta (ClubHotel Riu Jalisco). With this new hotel RIU's room capacity in Mexico will be near 10,000 beds. In addition, the hotel chain has started to build its tenth hotel in the country: Riu Palace Cabo San Lucas (located in Los Cabos), which is projected to open by December 2004. RIU has built all its hotels in Mexico, with the exception of the Riu Caribe and the Riu Lupita, both properties purchased by the company. RIU has 111 hotels in 15 countries and more than 15,000 employees. Its expansion in Mexico began in 1997 with the opening of the Riu Yucatan. In the last few years, RIU has consolidated its position as a prestigious trademark and as a standards benchmark for other companies in the Caribbean, where the hotel chain operates properties in Mexico, Dominican Republic, Florida, Cuba, Jamaica and Bahamas.

You slack???
Neva The Riu information is really hush-hush; there was no way for you to know. Even Riu Headquarters hasn't formally announced the purchase of the Caribbean Village Playacar. I just have mafia connections in the travel business (joking!) . |
