Five day November trip for Dana and Colleen's Vow Renewals

This is the first time we have been to Playa since moving to Merida in late January, 2014. We have been to Tulum a couple of times, and to Mahahual, but this is the first time in Playa.

The occasion was a vow renewal ceremony for playa info-er Uno and his wife. Lots of folks were there, folks we have known and folks we met for the first time on this trip.

Maybe some of them will post here and improve the flavor of this report. There will be photos, restaurant reviews, etc., later.

Just think...Here we are, the afternoon sun beating down on us,
a dead, bloated rhino underfoot,
and good friends flying in from all over...
I tell you, this is the best of times."

I get some photos of folks up. The first is from the vow renewal day. We drove over from Merida on the toll road towards Cancun. There is a new toll road that heads off that road to Playa del Carmen, cutting a pretty good chunk of time off the drive. It took us about 3 1/2 hours once we got out of the city center here.

Clockwise from the lower right we have Cheryl, Ranger, Leeds, Kent and Susie Q at Wah Wah

Since the trip was about the vow renewal ceremony, here is what I said

Quote:
We are here today to help Dana and Colleen celebrate their marriage as they gather to renew their vows to one other. Our presence here today, is a testament to their dedication to each other, to their families and to their friends. We have come from all corners of North America and there are folks here today from as far away as Alaska and as close as just down the street a bit. Oregon is, of course, well-represented as many of the close circle of family and friends flew down with Dana and Colleen – all on the same airplane. You may have seen stories about that flight on CNN.

Often at occasions like this one, the person in my spot will be a monk, a priest, a minister, a shaman or someone else in that general line of work. I am not any of those, though my father and my grandfather were ministers. I finished my career as a research analyst and a statistician. Believing that folks ought to play to their strengths, I did a little research and will talk a bit about statistics.

It is a fact, I learned, that the commonly held folk wisdom that about half of all first marriages in the United States end in divorce is right. Second and third marriages do a lot worse, statistically, but we'll talk about first marriages.

That means that, on the whole, the odds of having a first marriage last a long time is about the same as a coin flip – 50-50 or even odds. Flip a coin 20 times and the most frequent result is 10 heads and 10 tails. Repeat that 50 times and most of the results are going to be right around 10 heads and 10 tails. There is not much the coin flipper can do to change that. It is random chance at work.

Random chance is what people often really mean when they say things like even odds, or a 50-50 chance. The success of a marriage, however, is not based on random chance. The long-term success of a marriage like Dana and Colleen's is based on things other than random chance – things like continuing love, respect, hard work and a variety of other factors (Coffee brought to bed, good food, great physical intimacy, joint work toward common goals – like raising children to become responsible adults, for example).

So, today we get to celebrate with Dana and Colleen the results of their 25 years of love, respect and hard work. We get to hear them dedicate themselves to the next 25 years. We are honored to be here for that and I am honored to have been asked to play this small role in their celebration.
I did tell Dana and Colleen last January that they could have made a better choice.
