Thank you Vermicious........I always look forward to what you have to say (and your pictures). I'm also interested in your take on Isla.

Don't you just hate when people put "spending time with family and friends over the holidays" over OUR needs?

uh, yeah, it was. Except we quite liked it! Not the decor by any means but how private and unique it was. Just goes to show you that one person's 'weird' is another's 'charming'.

Overall we liked AM but I doubt we would stay there again, as jackjackattack said, it's about as plain as I would go- we loved the staff and thought the food was good though. Also we never had any electricity or water issues on our stay, that would be annoying! Also the water/beach looks 100% better than when we stayed there.

I am curious what you will have to say about PA, as we quite liked our stay there too.

Time to rewind the trip back to the beginning for the Isla Mujeres segment.

We decided to take a later flight, so we didnít arrive in Cancun until 4:30pm. It was our first flight on Southwest since they totally took over the Airtran routes and I have no complaints. Canada Transfers was on the ball as always and we were on our way in no time.

I think we had arrived right after a stretch of bad weather and lots of seaweed, so the water was pretty rough for the ferry ride over to Isla.

I managed to snap the sun setting just as we were getting off the ferry.

New ferry terminal

We decided to walk from the ferry to Privileges Aluxes. Its not a bad walk even with luggage, but I probably would have paid the cart guys if it had been daytime in August.

It was about 6:00pm when we arrived at PA. I got a super great deal for a Deluxe Suite at about 150$ a night with the all-inclusive package. When we arrived we were given a room on the first floor in the building furthest from the beach. I asked if they had anything available on a higher floor, and was told that it was the last room available because they was a huge wedding party. I had written earlier requesting a higher floor and ocean view, but I never received a response, and know they wonít guarantee anything anyway. Our view was literally of a row of 10 foot tall hedges and the back side of the hut where they hand out the towels. I was super bummed. I didnít take any pictures of the room, but it looks exactly like the pictures on the website. I found the bed to be painfully hard, but that's such a subjective thing. As a side/stomach sleeper, it game me a lot of shoulder pain and arm numbness.

We decided to head over to the bar before heading out to dinner. The wedding reception was actually taking place on the beach at the time. This was probably the only time we had any decent service during our stay. There were a few other couples having dinner at the beach restaurant area, but we were the only people seated at the actual bar and the bartenders were pretty on the ball considering they were also making drink for the 80 person wedding party. Liquor selection was extremely limited, which we expected, but even half of the things listed on the menu were not there. We are rum drinkers primarily and though we prefer Havana Club, Bacardi Anejo is acceptable and they had it available. We each had a few rum and diets and headed out to dinner at Bally Hoo after we made a game of chasing cockroaches.

I had read that Bally Hoo had the best fish tacos in the island. I didnít have time to test that theory, but they indeed make a fine fish taco. I am usually the sort that prefers a shrimp taco, but the fish tacos were far superior to the shrimp taco. I had some sort of lime/mint margarita and it was strong and tasty. They serve litre mixed drinks here, which is also nice.

Its really lovely here watching the boats and we were the only people in the place.

After dinner we explored town a bit and made our way over to Hidalgo. We decided to stop at Rock Bar, which was a great choice for us as they played great music and took requests. The owner and her husband were a lot of fun too.

Eventually we made our way back to the room and ordered some room service. We were told earlier at the bar that we could order shots of liquor from room service, but they refused. The Hawaiian pizza tasted like cat food, but I ate in anyway.

Day 2

Let me just get all of my complaining out of the way now and then I can move on to the awesome stuff about Isla.

-The breakfast buffet was inedible. Yes, I have high standards and Iím a buffet snob (years in the food industry will do that to you), The hot food was lukewarm. The cold food wasnít cold. The fruit was unripe. The pastries were dry. The only good thing was the omelet station, but Iím slightly allergic to eggs, so I donít eat them alone.

-Beach serviceÖawful. Slow and they got the watered down drinks wrong 90% of the time. He even wrote them down. If I ask for branded liquor, I expect to get that brand. If I ask for diet, I want diet. If you are out of something, tell me and I will order something else, donít just replace it with something random. If I ask for anejo I donít expect blanco. My cochinita tacos were mostly fatty chunks. The calamari had gone off. And it wasnít crowded on the beach that day.

-The pool was lovely, but there was loud construction going on around it and half of it was closed.

-Minibar requests were totally ignored, even with a tip. And I was only requesting Diet soda. Snacks were never replaced.

-When I asked again about getting liquor after the bar was closed, and relayed that room service wouldnít send any, I was told that they should have sent it.

On one hand, I feel bad for complaining because I paid so little, but on the other hand this same room/amenities/service was going for over $300 a night at the same time on Orbitz. If I had paid 300$ I would be furious. And 150$ a night is more than we normally pay for a room, but I figured we would make up for it in alcohol, but I doubt we even came close.

On the positive sideÖthe beach was excellent.

That was some bad service to say the least. Beach looking great! We haven't been to Isla in a long time....there is a B&B that is really great. We are trying to work a few days into a trip this year. Keep'em coming!

It was time to venture out to Playa Norte, so we walked from PA down the beach to Fenix where I wanted to check out the band.

Playa Norte was pretty, but wasnít what I was expecting from the pictures, the beach was pretty small in a lot of spots and there was lots of sand bags and garbage. Maybe it was just the weather/time of year, but I thought the beach at PA was much nicer.
