Yet another (slightly different) trip report - October 2014

Gonna try something a little different. I decided to leave my DSLR home this trip, and as such, I hate my pictures. I hardly took any in Playa (well, for me, I hardly took any). So instead of my usual day-by-day reporting, I will just separate my posts into themes and give my feedback and post the pictures.

First up, the hotel. We stayed at Aventura Mexicana. I know a lot of people love this place, and in some ways I can see why. It's a gorgeous property. It is quiet. It is close to everything, yet once inside the walls, it feels miles a way from the hustle and bustle.

I had booked a deluxe king room on the adults only side. We were taken to our room, which was an odd little stand alone room on the second floor. I “think” this room may be a higher category than we booked as it had some things like a water dispenser we weren’t expecting. But the room felt like a prison. The bathroom is non-functional with no counter space at all. When we arrived the door was like a plastic storm door with about an inch open at the top and bottom. At some point during our stay they replaced the door with a nice new wooden door. It was clear they were doing some upgrading, but I felt a little uncomfortable about leaving for the day, as there were workers in and out of the room installing the door.

The second huge issue was that there was no water or electricity for the first 2 days. We were not told about this at check-in and only became aware of it when we discovered a note in our room. It said the city was working on the electrical lines and as such, the power would be out between 10 or 11am and 6pm, which meant the water pumps were not working. I get that these things happen, but I felt like we should have been given notice upon check in. It wasn’t a big deal the first day because I had showered before we left Isla (where we had stayed for 3 days), but I woke up early the next morning to shower, and by 8:30am we already had no water or electricity. None of the other nearby store seemed to be without electricity. Maybe there were generators?? But I also saw hotel staff carrying hot water tanks up and down the hotel steps, which makes me wonder if it wasn’t really a city issue. We arrived on Tuesday and had normal power by Thursday, but it wasn’t until Friday that we had any kind of warm water or water pressure beyond a tiny dribble.

I won’t stay here again. Sometimes I think all the “its so pretty and quiet” talk is lost on me because we don’t spend a huge amount of time at our hotel and I have I am proven capable of sleeping through super loud club noise. The pool was ice cold, so we didn’t even make use of that for more than 15 minutes…and that was honestly a shower replacement! Next trip, I’m booking a budget place and I won’t be disappointed if the room doesn’t meet my standards. It was all around a trip of bad hotel choices, but I’ll get to Privileges Aluxes later.

Next up…the food. Isn’t that why you are all reading this anyway?? Honestly, there is nothing new here. We didn’t try any new restaurants because we really only had 5 days. A few new dishes at old favorites though.

First up is Kaxapa Factory. I wasn’t planning on eating here this trip, but we had just gotten in from taking the ferry from Isla and our room wasn’t ready. I had the world’s most epic hangover and needed food NOW!!! The food is always good though, so we were happy.

Bolitas de queso

Arepa with chicken and manchego

IMG_2374 by rumseywb, on Flickr

Kaxapa…probably beef

IMG_2375 by rumseywb, on Flickr

Don Chendo Fantastic as always. I crave the meatball pizza daily.

Antipasta salad

Meatball pizza

We took our leftovers to Umma Gumma afterwards and Angelo’s parents were in from Italy. I don’t thing they had ever seen deep dish pizza before, but they ate what we had left over and seemed to enjoy it.

Don Sirloin

Sirloin and pastor tacos. Every time I insist I haven’t tried their pastor, but every time I discover I just don’t like it as much as the sirloin. Sirloin for the win!

Queso fundito and cebollas

The queso was bland and the onions were inedible.

None here. They tend to run from my camera when I run at them screaming "boobies" and making honking motions with my hands.

Thank you for the new TR! I'd been watching for this one from you.

Sorry your room wasn't everything you'd hoped for. I'll keep your experience in mind for future trips.

sorry you were disappointed with Aventura Mexicana. the times that i have stayed there, the rooms were clean and no issues. we used the pool area too. hands down the best massages i have ever had is here!! perhaps it was just the room you were in.

anyhow...to the food. when we went to Don Chendo, we had the antipasta salad as well. and we ordered a double meatball pizza....YUM!!! ate late night at Don Sirloin and yes...the sirloin there is delish. mad we didn't make it to Kaxapa Factory (again), but it is on the list for the upcoming trip at the end of next month. the first night we went to Umma Gumma, we drank Angelo and Abril out of Malibu. great people. went back the next night too. plan on going again there on January 30.

oh...and thank you so much for your recommendation of the grilled octopus at Caguameria!! sooooo good. never in a million years did i think i would try it...but i am very glad that i did!

Oh, it was totally the room. I get claustrophobic just looking at the pictures. I don't think long mustard curtains on 3 of the 4 walls was doing the room any favors. As I walked by the regular rooms i would longingly stared into any open blinds and long for their nice white rooms.

so sorry about your room, Wendy. totally different experience with the rooms that i've stayed in there. very spacious. i wouldn't be too hip on the mustard curtains or the small space around the sink.

so, are you coming back to Playa for Angelo and Abril's last nights at Umma Gumma?

Woohoo...I've been waiting on this which reminds me I need to do mine for PA.

And yeah...PA scarred us so bad we might be taking my sister and her gf back to the Valentin much to my displeasure. I reallly wanted to do a full non-AI vacation but they have never been to Mexico and are only interested based on our AI experiences. I hate being out voted

I'm so sorry about your experience at Aventura Mexicana. I have stayed there twice, and really liked it. But I didn't have any water or electric issues.
Both times I had a room on the ground floor, right near the adult pool. Loved the quiet.

More, please!

Food Continued

We tried to go to Playa Maya for lunch, but this was right after they had opened back up from the renovations and I don’t think the kitchen was open yet…or at least there was nothing set up outside yet. Dave had been really looking forward to their octopus dish.

We ended up at Fusion.

Crabby friend

IMG_2425 by rumseywb, on Flickr

Gorgeous dish, but no seasoning at all.

IMG_2426 by rumseywb, on Flickr

Delicious, perfectly fried shrimp…not very pretty.

IMG_2427 by rumseywb, on Flickr

Aguachiles

Shrimp with bacon and beans and shrimp tacos.

IMG_2429 by rumseywb, on Flickr

Octopus tostada. I think you can tell that he loves those!

IMG_2432 by rumseywb, on Flickr

Imprevist Brunch

I did the breakfast menu, which came with the whole muffing basket, fruit and yogurt. It's a great deal. Dave did lunch which came with soup or salad and the entrée.

IMG_2445 by rumseywb, on Flickr

He thinks this may have been corn soup. They initially said the soup was something different (carrot maybe?) which he wasn’t looking forward to, but was happily surprised when the waiter said he had made a mistake and brought this soup. He wanted to lick the bowl.

Dave got the fish and chips. It was very crispy and looked huge, but they fried it at too high a temperature and the batter just puffed up and pulled away from the tiny piece of fish inside, which left it greasy.

IMG_2449 by rumseywb, on Flickr

I got the eggs benedict. They forgot my meat, but no one came back to check on us to get it corrected. When the waiter finally returned, he removed the benedict from our bill and just charged me for the continental breakfast…which was more than enough food for me anyway.

IMG_2450 by rumseywb, on Flickr

Babes

My favorite…cucumber daiquiri

IMG_2457 by rumseywb, on Flickr

Cheese rolls. Yum!

IMG_2458 by rumseywb, on Flickr

Crab rolls. I will probably pas on these next time. Just not to my tastes.

IMG_2459 by rumseywb, on Flickr

And we shared the large order of meatball. OMD heavenly delicious.

IMG_2460 by rumseywb, on Flickr

Crushed it

IMG_2461 by rumseywb, on Flickr

Wah Wah

Garlic fish filet. This was delicious..far exceeded my expectations.

IMG_2486 by rumseywb, on Flickr

Buffalo wings

IMG_2487 by rumseywb, on Flickr

Jalepeno popper

IMG_2488 by rumseywb, on Flickr

Caguameria

Free mini beers.

IMG_2489 by rumseywb, on Flickr

Ack. I forgot to take a picture before we mangled this cutting it in half. The most delicious shrimp torta ever. The shrimp were just barely fried and so sweet and delicious.

IMG_2490 by rumseywb, on Flickr

Mmmmmm fatty fried pork belly

IMG_2491 by rumseywb, on Flickr

IMG_2494 by rumseywb, on Flickr

IMG_2496 by rumseywb, on Flickr

The meal of shame…Bubba Gump in the airport

Seafood mac and cheese. Ok, wasn’t terrible

No, I wish! We have known they were closing for quite a while, so this was our goodbye to Umma Gumma trip. Now I need to find a new bar to hang out at.
