Bruce and Pam eat, drink and relax in San Diego

I was not going to do my usual little trip/ photo report of our long weekend in San Diego because we did so little and my photos almost literally put me to sleep. However, it's a boring day and I am finally getting around to processing the photos, so if I am forced to look at them, so should you.

In early November Pam suggested week do a long weekend in early December because it was already cold and the long term forecast looking bitter. When discussing where to go we focused on California. Old faithful S.F. came up first because we enjoy it so much, but we decided to pass on it this time because it had only been a couple of years since we had been there last. Next up was Los Angeles, but we passed on that because going there always means lots of time in the car getting from place to place, plus when I go there I am almost obligated to call friends and spend some time with them.

San Diego ended up the choice because the odds are better there for good weather, plus if I decided to call any friend we were close enough to meet half way. I ended up not making any of those calls.

Pam always does an excellent job picking us a place to stay and this time was no exception. The hotel was the Pacific Terrance, which is located right next to the beach in Pacific Beach. Not really a luxury hotel even though it is somewhat priced like one, but the location was perfect for us, the accommodations were excellent and the staff was wonderful. I can highly recommend this hotel. Little things like a glass of wine at check in, Keurig coffee machines and a variety of flavors at no cost in the room, fresh baked oatmeal and chocolate chip cookies every afternoon, and nice robes in the room were a nice touch also.

The beds were awesome but a little tall for Pam. Luckily they had portable steps in the closet for that purpose..

The people at the front desk said our room was their favorite location in the hotel and I probably would agree with them. Second floor right above the boardwalk that runs for miles along the beach. Good people watching and a good place for chatting with people walking by. Of all the hotels along the beach ours was the closest to the boardwalk.

The view from our balcony.

The hotel from the beach.

This was a Thursday-Monday trip, so we arrived in San Diego late Thursday afternoon. We got the rental car and I set my phone to take us to our first stop, Trader Joe's. Pam always seems to find us a hotel close to one, and this one was only about 1 mile from the hotel. We picked up some cheese, crackers, wine and Tequila the headed to the hotel.

Check in was a breeze, with help from a very friendly staff. After getting to the room and quickly unpacking we asked the front desk for a recommendation for a causal burger/sandwich place to eat. They mentioned a place right down the street called the Bare Back Grill. I remember seeing it on Groupon while looking for places to eat and save money. I did not purchase anything from Groupon before we left, but while walking to the restaurant I purchased one to The Bare Back for $20 to get $35 in food and drink. Sandwiches were just ok, but the craft beer choices were awesome and the tator tots were super awesome. WE stopped back another night just for the beer and some tator tots.

After eating we walked the area for an hour or so with another stop for a quick beer and called it a night about 10:30. There were so many restaurants and bars within walking distance that I figured we would be sticking close to home this trip. We did so, as I only took the car out once, and that was not until Sunday.

The weather was perfect while we were in San Diego. Sunny/ partly cloudy every day and 72-75 degrees for highs. We were a bit lucky because they had some heavy rain just before and after our visit. Pam was not going to bring shorts because the forecast said mid to high 60's, but I said she should because it could easily be warmer, and it was and we wore shorts the whole trip except for in the evenings when it cooled down a bit with the breeze from the ocean.

Pam likes to sleep in on vacation and I am a early riser so I was showered and out of the room by 7:30 each morning. The routine was the same each morning. I would walk the beach and the boardwalk and Pam would call me when she was close to being ready to leave for breakfast, which was usually around 10:30- 11:00.

The routine for breakfast was the same every morning also. I had read about a very popular little cafe just down the beach from us. Breakfast was great and prices were extremely reasonable. Breakfast for the two of us was just $11-$13. I usually clean my plate when out for breakfast but I could not come close to that at this place. Pam had one of their many breakfast burritos and could only eat about 1/3 of it. It looked like it weighed 3 lbs.

The place is called Kono's.

You would order your food and within 5 minutes they would bring it to your table or out to the deck overlooking the beach.

This was taken at lunch on our last day. It was extremely busy for breakfast. They closed at 3 pm every day.

Before booking the Pacific Terrace, Pam had checked out a place called the Crystal Pier because we know some people who have stayed there multiple times and love it. The place was booked for the weekend but I think we ended up at the best place for us anyway. The Crystal Pier is kind of cool though. The cabins are on a pier over the beach and water. The pier was open to the public all day but would close at sunset and reopen about 8:00 am so the guests would have privacy.

It's southern California and the beach so that mean lots of pretty young women and handsome young men, many which are surfers. There were surfers all over the place but unfortunately the surf was very clam while we were there.

I would walk the beach every morning watching the surfers, then every afternoon we would take very long walks on the beach. It was perfect for long walks, especially in the afternoon when the tide was going out.

Good looking surfer dudes

young kids surfing

a brave surfer with no wet suit in the very cold water and way too close to the pier

There were even surfin' birds!

Great photos, as usual. Makes me a little reminiscent of my youth. I never saw the view from the top of the cliffs before. I have however surfed (and jumped off) that pier.

More pics please! I like them.
