Dia De Los Muertos 2014 - Privilege Aluxes/Isla Mujeres

Since we’ve been home for almost 3 months and already have another trip on the books I figured I could finally do my Privilege Aluxes/Isla Mujeres TR from last year.

We had already gone on one week long vacation to Puerto Vallarta so we were trying to keep the budget a bit lower for a quick 5 night getaway in late October, specifically over Halloween and Dia De Los Muertos weekend (Day of the Dead). I’ve always been interested in Isla Mujeres and the prices were right so we booked for 10/30-11/4.

We flew DFW to CUN on 10/30, boarding was 30 minutes late but the pilot made up for it plus some since we got to CUN 10 minutes early. There weren’t any lines anywhere and we were fully prepared with all of our forms so we made it out of the airport in record time. A bit odd…we didn’t get a red light but the lady still stopped me and searched my stuff. Maybe my sh!t eating grin looked guilty. We used CARM for our transfer since I was somewhat obsessed with having my name on a sign. I’m not sure if it was my excitement or what but it seemed like getting to the Puerto Juarez ferry dock took longer than it takes us to get to Playa Del Carmen. And just an fyi, I started doing collages to save Photobucket room but then decided I was too lazy to continue that so the first couple pics are in that form.

Even though Privilege Aluxes is only a few blocks North of the ferry terminal we had a lot of luggage (in true Kelli fashion) so we paid 40 pesos for a cab. We got there in 3 minutes and walked right up to the check-in counter. We were informed that we were upgraded to a Platinum suite. It was beautiful but the more I studied it the more I realize it wasn’t a true platinum suite, it was the 2nd bedroom of a Presidential Suite. It was beautiful and had one of the only 100% private patios but we didn’t have a kitchen or separate living area…or any room to walk around in the room for that matter. We didn’t complain since it was a free upgrade but if we had booked a platinum and they gave us this room we would have requested a switch.

The ferry ride over was amazing (despite the really bad blown speaker from the singer). A lot of people complain about the PA lobby but we thought it was just fine, they had a really cool fountain that went across the entrance. When I had too much to drink I refused to step on it, kind of entertaining.

Definitely the prettiest towel art that we’ve ever had in Mexico:

I quickly unpacked while Doug checked out the room, patio and a few work emails. We were both starving so we went straight to Café Del Mar and had a late lunch…along with a ton of really strong drinks.

I had fried calamari and shrimp “tacos” while Doug had chicken fajitas. We both had some ice cream for dessert and I have to say it was all delicious. After lunch we realized most of the beach loungers were full so we went to the pool. In order to keep day one of vacation tradition we closed the pool bar down plus some. We ran into some people I had talked to on TripAdvisor while there so we all decided to meet for dinner at Café Del Mar later that night.

Dinner at Café Del Mar wasn’t near as good as lunch, at least for me it wasn’t. I ordered coconut fried shrimp and they were ok but a tad overcooked. All it came with was a small serving of bland beans but my husband loved his grilled chicken. After dinner we listened to the live music and enjoyed drinks and dancing with our toes in the sand. It was a really great night.

Newlyweds that we talked into dancing, everyone cleared the floor for them…it was rather sweet:

Great start, Was that deck area with the pool private for your room?

Thanks! And yeah, it was all ours and probably the best part of the hotel besides the beach. We're huge patio people so this saved PA for us.

Yeah, I may have hated PA less if we had that huge patio and ocean view, instead of the view of a wall.

After seeing your update I feel bad for even complaining...but PA was a big letdown overall for us. I'd love to give it another try but I think I'd much rather go non-AI on Isla and rent a golf cart for the entire stay witht he room savings.

We woke up a bit hungover but were excited for our first full day of vacation. We had a quick (but disappointing) breakfast at the Sabor buffet then hit the beach. We quickly realized that there was a large wedding party there since almost all of the beach chairs were taken and they were playing games. We found some and ordered some drinks for our first walk into the ocean. The PA beach isn’t as large as playa Norte but it was still beautiful and perfect for floating.

Around the corner from the PA beach:

After a few hours at the beach we went to the pool for some non-picture worthy grilled burgers and a swim. We both took a cat nap near the pool in one of the comfy beds then got washed up for dinner.

We wanted to go to town but decided to wait until we could start earlier and had more energy so we went to Café Del Mar again for dinner. I had pesto pasta that was good except for the meat. Doug had the same chicken he had the night before. Shortly after dinner the wedding party took over most of the restaurant with a private event so service got slow. Not only that but locals were walking through trick-or-treating, which we weren’t prepared for at all so we decided to call it a night and start early on Saturday.

Sabor at night:

Beautiful altar in the lobby:

Despite the bed being a little firmer than we prefer we both slept great. We woke up early and hungry and decided to walk into town for breakfast since we wanted a break from the resort food. I had read about Lola Valentina so we decided to eat there. We were the only ones there at first but the service was good and coffee was great. I had coconut tres leches French toast and Doug had the jalapeno popper scramble. Everything about the experience was perfect.

After lunch we decided to take advantage of our gorgeous roof top pool and huge patio. We knew we wanted to rent a golf cart later so we didn’t want to start drinking. The pool was frigid but amazing.

The pool looked right over the school next door. Even though we could hear them in the mornings we loved it, it was fun watching them at recess and singing in the morning.

I could get used to this:

And this:

We decided to eat a quick snack/early lunch at Café Del Mar before renting the golf cart I had the surf & turf brochette and Doug had the chicken fajitas (again..). It was all good but not great.

That patio is awesome! We just had a small one with a tub, I would have far preferred that one. Our room overlooked the cemetery...at least they were quiet!

Keep it coming. You look great, btw!

Yeah...unfortunately I think the patio spoiled us. While we were on our way home my husband declared that he'd never want to stay at PA without that patio and if you don't get upgraded for free that's $350-400/night

And thanks for the compliment! Now if only I could lose the 15lbs I've gaineed since then.
