Taking the farm to the GPR

Day 1 Wednesday July 10

For our return trip in July, 2013, Cow and Penguin decided that they didn't want to go, so they sent their friends: Cow and Bear.

Instead of a direct flight, this year our flight connected through DFW. It was supposed to be a 50 minute layover, but the plane that was supposed to take us to Cancun was turned back for mechanical reasons. The 50 minute layover turned into a three hour layover. It was a pain, but I had already adopted the "I'm on vacation" attitude as soon as I stepped on the plane in Denver. We were content to wait. We knew we'd get to Playa eventually.

We did get to Playa, eventually, and got a red light coming through customs! WTH was that about? The agent kept asking me rapid-fire questions in Spanish, and all I could say was "no entienda, no habla espanol. Habla usted ingles?" (Gracias to Senor Aragon and my one year of high school Spanish!) Well, she didn't speak English, and I didn't speak Spanish, and I still have no idea what she wanted. She did eventually let us go, and we made our way to our transfer, some cervezas and the beach!

Upon arriving back at the GPR, we found that we had been upgraded to an oceanview suite for one night. They were setting up for some sort of beach party that night, which you can see in the background.

We went down to the beach picnic for dinner and then went to bed. That was a long day!

Thursday July 11
This was the day that we were supposed to get our new room (remember the upgrade was only for the night), so we went to breakfast, then back upstairs to get our things ready to move.

Jim, mid-chew.

Once we were settled in our new room (326) we decided to head out. We are both geocachers (more info at geocaching.com), and set out to find our first international one. This is what was left:

I counted it as a find.

Just goofing off

Before we left home, my girlfriend told me to have a Riviera Maya for her, so I did.

We set out to find Wah Wah's to meet up with some peeps to share some things we had muled down. Found it, and fell in love.

Friday, July 12 Day 3
Not many pictures today, it was mostly just beach and relax. We did walk down to Mega for the first time. We didn't buy anything, just walked around.

Here are the three pictures I took that day.

Saturday July 13 Day 4

Sunrise

Today, we are going to Tulum!! The YucaTreks people picked us up right on time, and we were off. Like our trip to Chichen Itza last year, I won't bore you with all of the pictures of the ruins, just a few.

Omar and Eder were WAY fun!!

I just like this one

I love these flowers

Then we were off to the beach club. No idea where it was -- somewhere in Tulum, but it made me fall in love with the beaches here.

I fought hard to lose 30 pounds before this vacation, and I can really see it in this picture. The fact that I am willing to put it up for the internet to see really says something. This was this year's "Knee Deep" picture.

At Maria's the night before, Jim had asked the chef if he would make Tampequena (sp?), and of course the chef was happy to oblige. After a little snorkeling in cenotes, we were back for it!

Sunday July 14

Today, we walked back to Mega, then spent the day doing nothing until it was time for dinner at Il Pescatore.

Our take from Mega (thanks to Omar and Eder for getting me hooked on Cheetos Pofs). Also, there were no straws at the GPR, so we had to get our own.

Dinner at Il Pescatore

After dinner, we headed out to the pool bar for a few drinks. This bride was obviously very happy, but she kept sticking her butt in Jim's face. He was annoyed, I was laughing.

We met a couple from England, and started ordering each other shots. I think it was the shot of Ouzo that did me in. I don't remember much else about this night.

Monday July 15
Today, we woke up sick, and things pretty much started going downhill from here. Stomach ache, vomiting, fever, chills. At first I thought we were just hungover, but I don't ever remember having a fever with a hangover.
Still determined to try and have a good time, we tried to go for a walk on 5th. We didn't make it very far before having to head back to the bathroom again. Maybe we made it to Wah Wah's? I'm not sure.

So glad to have hair ties!

We went to Xcaret for the noches show, but we were so miserable we didn't really enjoy it.

Tuesday July 16, our anniversary.

We spent much of the day in bed again, fever, chills, poop, etc. We did make it out to dinner, but again, we didn't enjoy it. I did watch the entire first season of Quantum Leap on my iPad, in Spanish with English subtitles.

Wednesday, July 17, home!

Everything about this day was miserable. Everything.

We remained sick for a little more than a week after we got home, but after a course of Cipro, we both finally started to feel better. On our upcoming trip, the Dr. said that she will send a prescription of Cipro with us, and then we can just start taking it if we start feeling poorly.

shots are evil! As are those hard-drinking 'couples from England'....they are what I am dreading the most about our upcoming Cuba trip.

I don't like shots that much anyway, And the worst part is that they don't let you say no! I think I might have survived that night, if I could have said no to half of what I was getting!

I actually remember starting to feel sick on Sunday, but I drank a lot of water and ate, it went away.

I have had to learn how to say no and have people understand I mean it. It took me a few years unfortunately....but now no one tries to bully me into doing shots.
