Grocery shopping that does NOT involve Walmart!

Hi,
I've searched extensively through recent/past posts about grocery shopping. I haven't found much that does not involve Walmart or another major grocery store.
Sigh.
Will be in Playa Apr 3 - 10, first time renting a condo, scoping for long term winter hideout. 15th time to Playa, love it.
Surely there are smaller places to buy fresh local stuff?? I will not under any circumstances buy anything at Walmart.
Are there any good small bakeries, cheese shops, butchers, etc? I know there isn't an actual Mercado, but small shops that carry fresh produce?? What about wine? A couple of years ago I did hear about a Saturday Farmer's Market, but can't find any posts about it. Where to buy fresh seafood??
Please help!
Susan

DAC, just north of Constituyentes on Avenida 30, on the east side. Lots of fresh produce there. Buy wine at Off the Vine on 1st north of... I think 26th? 24th? Lots of farmers markets here: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?f...4266120&type=1

I like DAC, but I'm guessing the produce at Mega, Soriana, Chedraui, (and yes, Walmart) is just as fresh as DAC. Nothing is grown locally so their sources may be the same.
But with DAC, you are supporting a local business.
Now...with their success I wish they would move into a larger space. It's an aggravatingly tight space.

I agree...between all the shoppers and the employees constantly stocking and rearranging produce, it is TIGHT. I am very glad I am not an overweight/large person, or it would be even more difficult.

If you are looking for organic, there is one small cooler back in the back right side that has organic produce, and one beside it with some lovely local/natural yogurt, but most of the produce at DAC is conventional. The items that do have a sticker have the four-digit code beginning with the number '4', indicative of conventionally grown produce. Just FYI since I've heard many people refer to DAC as an "organic market". They do have organic items, but it is certainly not all, or even mostly, organic. Still, it's close, so it's the place we buy most of our produce. And they have quite a bit of organic non-produce items as well.

We don't shop at Walmart except for the rare non-food item we can't find anywhere else. The lines are crazy long, and I prefer not to support them if there are alternatives -- and there almost always are.

Also check out Bio-Natural on Avenida 10 near Calle 16. Not much if any produce but lots of nice organic items and some lovely locally produced things as well, like soap.

I look for fresh, ripe food ready to use. One year I need to make some guacamole for friends who were coming over that evening. The avocados at DAC and Mega - well, you could have broken windows with them. The ones at Walmart were ready for use that evening.

Any good chef knows what they need and will buy it where they can find it. Under-ripe avocados do not make good guac. I prefer not to shop at Walmart, but........

Hmm. Where?, great news! I went on a "walking food tour" last year conducted by a local Mexican chef, she said there was no Mercado. Guess I should have dug deeper.

Lots of folk are recommending DAC so will certainly check it out. Thanks for the wine rec. Your FB link does not work FYI, says "no longer available"?
Thanks so much for the info.

Thanks! I see nobody else has recommended the mercado. It's pretty far from where I am staying - is it worth a visit??

Thanks, that one doesn't work either, appears to be a permission issue. Not to worry - now I know they exist I'm sure I can find the info!
