Playa On My Mind

We got off the plane in Winnipeg to -25C after leaving Playa on Valentine's day. Had a late snack with our son before crashing at the hotel he works at. The next day we flew into Saskatoon to -4C temps. and a fresh dump of snow. Got back to North Battleford and had to spend the next hour shoveling the snowdrift that was blocking my garage and then another half hour clearing a path to the house from the garage. No doubt about it, vacation time was over.

I wanted to start this off at the ending so everything that follows has good vibes.
WestJet got us into Cancun from Saskatoon without any delays and we literally flew through customs and soon were in our private transfer, cold beer in hand, heading down 307 towards Playa and the Plantation House. This was our first time doing the condo thing and we were both excited to be bracelet free this trip.

If you look closely, there is a folder on top of the two larger suitcases. in this folder was all the research I had compiled, maps, restaurant lists, contacts, and flight info. That was the last time we saw that folder as apparently we ( or I, if you ask Diana ) failed to bring it inside with us. No problem I said, we would just rely on the info inside my head and wing it the rest of the way. The Plantation House was everything I was told it would be, with a great view from the upstairs bedroom of the turquoise water we have grown to love.

My only complaint about our accommodations, and it is a small complaint, is that being on the third floor with another flight up to the bedroom, meant that we climbed A LOT of stairs during our stay there. Not bad sober, but after a few rums you had to be careful to avoid a long and painful tumble down.

The views and the central location of this condo were big selling points when we started looking in April last year, but the biggest selling point for me was it's closeness to UmmaGumma Bar, which is literally 40 steps away. We became very good friends with Angelo and Abril last year and we were really looking forward to picking up where we left off. You can imagine my disappointment when I learned in November that they were closing before we would get there. Having had some time to accept this fact, after getting squared away in the condo and hitting up Romeo's for our first meal, I Facebook messaged Angelo so we could get together and give him the gift we brought down for the bar. I can't begin to describe the excitement I felt when he responded back that the bar was still open! We quickly made it back to the condo to pick up the gift and were soon raising a glass with our great friends. Here is Angelo with the new addition to the bar.

And our two friends.

It must be really hard to come back to those temps, I can't imagine how cold that must be!

It was very quiet. The upstairs bedroom has patio doors leading out to a deck with loungers and a second bathroom with an outdoor shower. I used the shower a lot, giving quite a show to the people staying across the way. Opening the patio doors and leaving the windows above the bed open cooled the sleeping area off nicely in the evening, but we closed all the windows when we went to sleep so we wouldn't hear the hustle and bustle that starts on the streets at 6 am.

Yes it was definitely cool that we got to meet up with them. They are going to have us over to their house next time and Angelo is going to cook for us! Let us know what it's like with new ownership. Hopefully they can maintain the cool vibe that Angelo and Abril have cultivated.

The nice part is that it is already 2/3 of the way through February so those temps. won't be around much longer. We normally go at the start of January which leaves us having to endure at least 7 weeks of hellish cold when we get back. Think Feb. is going to be our time from now on.

Dude. Don't you know that living here necessitates a minimum of two winter getaways??

Great start! More, please.

Unfortunately, although we are dual incomes, we also have two kids (unlike some lucky ppl on here) so once a year get-aways are all we can do at this point.

As it turned out, two of Diana's foster sisters and their spouses were staying just up the highway at the Ibersostar. We had made plans to hook up on Friday, but they decided to come in Wednesday as well. Apparently, one of the girls has a jealous streak and her hubby being around bikini clad beauties made her a tad intolerable and we were the remedy.
