A new definition of tourist? Although I have some Argentine pesos I'd love to unload...turns out nobody in Buenos Aires wanted them..and the currency exchanges didn't either!

Remember those pundits on tv/radio a few years ago telling you to get rid of US dollars because they'll soon be worthless. And load up your bunkers with gold because it is going to $10,000 an ounce.

Does anyone know if the currency exchange at the airport gives a decent exchange rate? Gone by it many times but never used it.

No money exchange gives a decent rate. They 'buy' your dollars at a discount and 'sell' you pesos at an inflated rate - it's how they make their money. Search the 'ATM' threads for the best discussions of this problem.

"Decent" rate is relative. I always think back to the 10 to 1 we got years ago. (How many years ago?) So.... when I am getting a 14 to 1 cambio exchange it seems darned good, even though you ATM users are getting a better exchange. I'm happy with it.

It's your money, but that's like you handing me a $100 bill and asking for change, and I give you $92 back. You're just giving money away.

Yes, that's true IF you don't incur any fees in your transaction. But for me....I just like using cash. I don't even have an ATM card.

FWIW, I purchased pesos at my bank the other day (BOA). I was given an exchange rate of 14.84 (+ a $7.50 fee). I checked XE.com the second I got back in my car and it showed 15.46.
Yes, I realize ATM is the best bet, but still have a ways to go before vacation time.

You're giving money away by doing this.

How so? As I stated, I still have quite a while before my vacation. Anything can happen in 2-3 months. Out of MANY trips to Playa, this is by far, the best exchange I've ever received, even when using my ATM card IN Playa.
If you're speaking of the $7.50 fee, I'll consider it a convenience fee that I'm happy to pay. It never fails, even when my intentions are to hit the ATM first thing, it never works out that way.

Exchange rate at 2 pm today is 15.6989 pesos to the USD - might break 15.7 before the day's over. Prices will rise accordingly. Might be a good time to go out and buy whatever-it-is you need now - unless it goes to 18, and then you'll feel bad that you didn't wait.

I can see this causing some movement in the prices of imported goods, but I don't see that it should impact Mexican-produced goods or local prices. But either way, I think I'll buy some pesos for my account.
