Ronny's replacement yet?
Any plans by anyone to move into the restaurant/beach bar space that used to be Ronny's? We're maybe coming in June to the Pelicano, and we'd love to have someone there by then.

They're already there: the hotel has been running its own restaurant/bar there for the past several months. I see Jesus (the manager at the Pelicano) semi-regularly and the topic has occasionally come up and I've never heard any mention that they plan to rent it out again. And that would stand to reason, you know, if -- whether it's in any objective sense a valid view or not -- their perspective is that it didn't end so well the last time they rented it out. Hotels down here wring their hands over renting out space, you know. You can wash your hands of a lot of work and take advantage of your (mostly physical) position and your facilities, but you also lose a chunk of control over what happens and you may not like the results, either. Same thing goes on on the reservations end with agencies, you know.

Just our opinion, but we tried the restauant that used to be Ronny's and we were terribly disappointed... Not sure if we hit them on a bad night, but I would pass it in a moment, if I was to try it again...to us, obviously differnt cooks....the coconut shrimp I remembered was a toatal disaster....

Excellent! :o Did they bring back the breakfast buffet?
I'll always miss Ronny's (both the man and the establishment). The food was excellent, and he had a great staff. However, it's not so much that I need something comparable, even. I just thought that I'd feel a little sad looking down from my balcony and seeing the place empty.

Sue,
Nice to see you resurfacing again. On one of my last trips to PDC, I took a series of photos at Hotel Pelicano and had to work hard to make them look flattering. It's very obvious that the property has been severly neglected by maintenance. If you're looking for a beach hotel in that immediate area, I'd look to Playa Maya, Alhambra, Albatross, Costa del Mar and maybe even Colibri. Seems to me you enjoyed the Zanzibar last time, if so, you'd probably like one of the private huts in the jungly Villa Catarina. You might also try Posada Freud, Tropical Casablanca or Maya Bric on the budget end. My friend Peggy from Minnetonka has a sweet condo at Las Palmas, across the street from Zanzibar that I'm sure you'd like or if you really want to splurge, check out a condo in the new addition of Villa Sacbe on 1st Avenue. Private me if you need any help... Jimmy Last edited by JimmyMN; 05-01-2004 at 01:40 AM.. |

Is the old Pelicano really looking that bad? Since we can only go for one week, it's important that we've got a beachfront room w/terrace (but we still have get it as cheaply as possible). We've had so many great times in room 201 at the Pelicano.
Anyone else been there recently? |

I looked at Villas Sacbe, and I'm very impressed. However, they aren't on the beach, are they? I know one looked very nice, and I think the rate per week in June was only $500 or so. But we have to at the very least have a view of the Caribbean. I am not going to let that puppy out of my sight if I'm only going for a week.

Ronny's
Sue,
Check out the Playa Maya. It's right next door. Excellent place on the beach. They have ocean view rooms with terraces, great people, excellent food. It's alittle slice of heaven thats hard to beat. Steve can help you out, just email him. |

The problem is that I can't afford the Playa Maya. I would probably be my first choice if I could. I have to have ocean front (I'd maybe settle for ocean view), but it's got to be no more than $80/night (12%tax included in that price).

Well I don't know if/where you can get that at that price, but for the record, we don't have any individual rooms that are ocean front here, anyway, although we do have many very nice ocean view rooms.
I know that the ocean front rooms at the Pelicano and the Alhambra on either side of us are their most popular rooms, but frankly I've never quite seen what the big attraction is. I mean, with all the activity on the beach during the day, views blocked (not so much on the Pelicano side) by palapas and restaurants and such, and all the traffic not only during the day but also at night, well, you just seem a bit overly exposed out there, I guess. I'd personally like such a room better in a more remote setting or as part of a big resort. But hey, obviously many people do like them, so go with it. Anyway, hope you find what you're looking for! Check out this room at Hotel Alhambra, Calle8 and the beach (right next door to Playa Maya). It's located on the 3rd floor, next door to Yoga by the Sea. They'll probably want a little more than $80 per night but I suspect you'll be going in early June which is low season, so should be negotiable. Be direct... let them know what you can afford and how long you plan to stay. Throw in the fact that it's your honeymoon... they'll either lower the price or raise it. In the meantime, I'll see if I can find some cheap airfare for you but I'll need your prospective dates.
If you really liked the charm of the 1998-2000 Playa del Carmen, you might want to try an ocean front cabana in Tulum...
