Royal Playa Del Carmen/Valentin Imperial Maya

I'm baaaack...

After our last stay at Playa Maya this past July, my husband and I decided we want to try an AI for our next summer trip. Playa Maya was wonderful, however, we really miss being able to lounge around a huge pool and relax. It was also so dang hot that walking around town was frustrating (chunky thigh problems ugh). I knew all of these things going in, but being the stubborn person I am I wanted to try it out anyway. Years past we've stayed at Luna Blue and Royal Haciendas (free trip from parents time share). As much as we LOVE staying in town and going to eat at all the different restaurants, we would really love to just have a relaxing, lounging by the pool drink-in-hand vacation. We will not be able to resist going to our favorite restaurants though, but oh well, it will be worth it to spend the extra cash.

SO. This summer we want to try one of the nicer all inclusive and so far I am torn between the Royal Playa del Carmen or the Valentin Imperial Maya...

We would be coming July 9th-July 16th (we are a bit flexible though).

Which resort would YOU choose based on pool, service, beach, rooms, FOOD, and how can I get the best deal possible?

We have been to valentine and it was nice but we prefer smaller resorts. Have you looked at El Dorado Maroma? Last time we were there there was done construction not sure if it is done yet but love the size, amenities and service

hard decision

I've been to both resorts twice each. Valentin has different rooms i.e. not all the same room set up. There was lots of walking as its big but we don't mind walking. Only resort we've had to buy red wine at (I'm not a wine snob but it was undrinkable). We were always able to find someplace in the shade. Valentin has started charging for lobster and some other things you normally get all inclusive (sort of like an a cruise ship on land).

Royal (RPDC) is in town, you share the beach with lots of others and the grounds aren't that big. They do a lot of conventions, weddings, special events, all of which adds a lot of people. They actually ran out of red wine at the resort (the whole resort?). Liked that they had a guy with a cart passing out sunscreen and books when we went but we had a hard time finding shade. Loved Pelicano's (on the beach), the 24 hour cafe and the other restaurants.

It would be a hard decision between the two but we've found a third option (but it's more expensive). You can have a great vacation at either. I would read reviews on Tripadvisor for both. If you plan to stay at the resort, I'd probably do the Valentin but the excursions, cab rides can add up if you plan a lot of outside events.

As for getting the best deal. I price it with the tour operators in my area (Funjet, Apple and United Vacations) then get with my travel agent. Sometimes Funjet has promotion codes that take off up to $300. My travel agent usually gets me a good deal.

So, what's your third option? Hope to return to PDC in 2016, we were unable to take a vacation the past two years.

Book the Royal. You will not regret it. It's very nice and the service is outstanding. Rooms are great as well as the amenities. 5th Avenue is directly outside the entrance of The Royal and is such a blast. It's a nice relief from the resort. You're steps away from great restaurants, bars, live music, shopping, you name it. We've been 3 years in a row and can't bring ourselves to try something different in fear that it would be a drastic step down.

We've been the The Royal 4 times and VIM once. Both are great resorts. The pool is great at the VIM, as well as the food. The Royal is a little more upscale, plus you don't have to walk as much to get to the restaurants. You can't go wrong with either, but the The Royal also has 5th avenue as a plus, just 2 blocks away

If you still want to enjoy the restaurants in town the VIM is about 25 usd by cab each way. You should check out the Royal Hideaway. Adults only smaller resort in Playacar, great food and way better beach than the RPDC and still walking distance to town. Beautiful pool.

Thank you everyone for all of the input. I'm sure it will help someone else considering the same options! After MUCH deliberation and discussion with others, we decided we can't bring ourselves to not stay in town. Once we have children, however, I'm sure it will be a different story

We don't have kids (all grown), but love going to VIM, been twice in 4 years. Stayed at the Excellence Riviera once for a change, but would not go back there; way too expensive. However, since trying out the condo thing it may be hard to go back to a resort again, although we may go one more time just for the pampering.

That's what we miss most about the big resorts. That, and the giant pools!

VIM vs Royal

we have stayed at VIM and it was awesome! big resort, but the way it is laid out is good and they have golf carts to take you where ever you want to go, we rarely saw more than 20 people at any given time other than breakfast. The downside if any is that you are not walking distance to any town, you will have to take a taxi or collectivo to Puerto Morelos or PDC. We have not stayed at the Royal, but we have stayed at Gran Porto next door and had full access to the Royal and we loved that, we decided we wouldn't want to actually stay there because it was so crowded and loud! but getting to use all the facilities at the Royal but sleep in peace at GPR was perfect.
