Spirit Airlines into Playa...Good or Bad?

Looking to make our 5th trip to Playa in the Summer of 2016. We fly out of Houston, and noticed Spirit has some relatively cheap flights. We have never flown Spirit before. Anyone have experiences with the airline? Good? Bad? Indifferent?

I have flown Spirit quite a few times.

Most of the time it's a "get what you pay for" experience. You might have gum on your arm rest, ripped fabric on the seats, surly flight attendants, pay for your carry on luggage, cramped seats, etc...

However, where they really stink is if there is a problem. I had a flight canceled, and their service in getting everyone rebooked was far worse than the major carriers. Long story short, I didn't get on a flight for 36 hours despite there being lots of flights before then on other airlines. (I thought by law they had to put me on those) I didn't need as much luggage for my later flight, but they refused to refund my prepaid luggage that I no longer needed.

It's a risk, but it will probably work out. But if there's a problem, don't say I didn't warn you!

Lol Susie! BTW...loved your New Orleans post. We are headed there for NYE for the 2nd straight year. Had an absolute blast in the deb-ochery that is N.O.! We are going to do the garden tour on your suggestion...probably do the Haunted tour, too.

Thanks Drew...we will prob stay away from Spirit, unless it's just too much cheaper than others....we'd much rather spend our dough on street tacos and tequila

Spirit has no interline agreement with any other airline, so whatever "rules" might apply to a legacy carrier (United, Delta, American, etc) do not apply to Spirit. They can't put you on another carrier because no other carrier will accept their fare, they don't have to and 100% will not. Your only hope when your flight is cancelled is another Spirit flight - which probably means you're stuck for a few days.

We flew Spirit into Saint Thomas last year. It was so bad, I changed my return booking upon arrival. $50 for a carry on, A CARRY ON. I can't remember what the checked luggage was, we didn't check any, but I know it was outrageous. The plane was disgusting. Smelled of vomit and body odor. I will never fly Spirit again.

Quite sure you did. I don't fly on Spirit and I try with everything I have not to put a client on Spirit too. But sometimes you simply have no choice so I will if that is their only nonstop option. But connecting flights - I won't book.

The checked luggage fee is less than the carry on fee. This is to discourage people from bringing carry ons (to speed up the boarding process). Frontier now charges for carry ons too.

Great advice all! I read several bad reviews online, but you know how reviews go...most people only write them when they are upset, so I thought hearing it from some fellow PDC ladies and gents would be much more reliable, so I'll wave the and go with another...probably Southwest.

Ummmm... I haven't been to New Orleans in 15 years, so I'm pretty sure that wasn't my post! Have fun though!

spirit

We have flown spirit for possibly 10 trips to Playa and each time it hasn't been a good experience. The only thing about spirit is the price is right!

Before you add on the fees for luggage, carry ons, a bottle of water, pre-assigned seats....
