Where to stay

Planning our family's summer vacation. We have 2 kids ages who will be 5 and 9 at the time of travel. We've stayed at Barceló Palace in Playa once before and would be willing to go there again. I thought about downgrading from the Palace to the Tropical/Colonial to save some cash. HOWEVER, we stayed at a Barceló in Punta Cana 2 years ago and it was a dump.. so that kind of scares me.

My husband and I stayed at the Riu Palace in Montego Bay this past summer and loved it. So I thought about doing a Riu property. Does anyone know if any of the Riu's in Playa are family oriented?

...we stay at the riu resorts in playa regularly...the riu yucatan and the riu palace mexico, we really love them both, but the riu tequila and the newly refurbed riu playacar are very nice too...you can take a look at the riu website for information about their particular children's activities/designated play areas...we don't have children, but have traveled with families who do have young children, and they found the riu staff and facilities provided a great stay for the kiddies and adults too...whatever you decide, have a great time, we stayed at the riu palace tropical bay in Negril, and the riu palace punta cana in the domincan too...but wouldn't bother going back to either of those destinations...playa really has stolen our hearts... ...i'll be happy to help answer any questions if I can...

I would look into the Beach/Caribe sections too. Those areas were reno'ed recently and they've done a lot of nice improvements. New lobbies, restaurants, enclosed buffets with A/C, new mall, sports bar, teen club, water park. The Club Premium rooms at the Beach/Caribe were gutted and renovated, they're very nice! At the end of the day, Beach, Caribe, Tropical, Colonial - none are like Punta Cana, none are anything close to being a dump. If you've stayed at the Palace, you probably saw the other sections already, no? Did you get the impression that they were dumpy?

I would say the RIU YUCATAN with children. We have stayed there with our kids and 3 other families with kids . Everyone had a blast.

Ages from 6-18 .

We have never stayed at the Barcelo but have stayed at the Palladium with our kids . And everyone agreed Riu was much better.

Playacar or Yucatan

Hi Rainbow... I've been looking at the Riu properties in Playa. Just looking at the pics it looks to me like both the Playacar and Yucatan have been renovated recently.

Which has the better pool? In the pics it looks like the pool at the Yucatan is not just a standard rectangle,,, which I like. Do both hotels have shallow areas for younger kids to wade in the water?

...I haven't visited the newly renovated riu playacar, but I know that both the riu yucatan and the riu playacar have dedicated children's pools...i'm not sure about the various depths in the regular pools...sorry...but you are correct in that the riu yucatan pools are not rectangular...and, the area where loungers are in the pool offers a more shallow area...

Hard Rock Playa

Thanks everyone for the suggestions... in the end we chose Hard Rock in Playa. Our travel agent recommended it. We're excited! Thanks again!
