TRIP REPORT - PDC

Wow - has it grown. Malls with escalators on Fifth Avenue! And Fifth has expanded to the north with more shops and restaurants.

Will add photos later on but here is my dining summary:

Breakfast:

Cuevo del Chango - consistently good. Chilaquiles, French Toast and yogurt with fruit - 3 times in 7 days

Nativo - great chilaquiles, good eggs Mexicana

Mayan Bistro - good, pleasant setting outside, chilaquiles and omelet

La Cieba - migas, pancakes and eggs Mexicana

Vagabundo - mediocre - not recommended

Lunch:

Puerto - Baja shrimp and fish tacos Baja tempura style - very good

La Fragata - shrimp tacos - good but different

Mezzanine (Tulum) excellent Thai with beautiful presentation, IMO. Chicken satay, sauteed mushrooms, shrimp dish and fish and chips. Pretty setting overlooking a beautiful beach - recommended

Dinner:

IL Baretta - good, large portions. Ravioli, pesto spaghetti, carbonara and arrabiata

Salt Rock - overall mediocre - shrimp and scallop appetizer had 1/2" diameter scallops, lamb shank special was good, pork schnitzel very dry. Not recommended.

Plank (Valentine's evening) grilled shrimp and salmon were both overcooked IMO, ahi tuna pretty good, pork dish pretty good - okay but pricey

Carboncito's -(twice) first was very good, crab stuffed banana peppers and chicken tacos, Second time not as good - ceviche, shrimp tacos, fresh fish and fatty pork. Show time with waiters balancing three margaritas on their head
.
That's Amore - good, seafood spaghetti, ravioli, fettucine alfredo and pizza margherita

500 Gramo Grill - grilled shrimp tacos - okay, nothing special

La Brocherie - best meal and cheapest meal - rotisserie chicken, (their specialty) chicken cordon bleu, good French fries, wonderful rice (wife loves fries and liked the rice better - and the fries were good ones) and fantastic desserts - make reservations - gets very busy - highly recommended - couple of blocks off fifth on AV 15 between c 4 & 6.

SPECIAL EVENT

Two of us took a cooking class at Co.Cos Cooking School which is about 100 yards from Mamitas. It was great - did a one entree selection with several salsas, rajas and chicken enchilada with mole. Followed up with a lesson on tequila and mezcal with a tasting. Best Mexican cooking class I have been to. Very very hands on and a small group.

Contact Coty at http://www.cookinplaya.com. Highly recommended.
