Help needed

I am sure Shammy will weigh in on this as I see her from the barcelo forums.

My dilemma - after 4 times at the barcelo maya palace deluxe my wife wants to try another hotel. Here is what I have narrowed it to.

Paradisus Playa del Carmen La Esmeralda - junior suite swim out best price on what I feel like I am getting vs other resorts - i know the beach wont be the barcelo (sigh) - kids pool looks good. (winner so far for price)

Xcaret deluxe with unlimited pass to the park - i like the unlimited park enterance, but not sure about the lagoon beach area - the rooms dont look as nice more expensive with unlimited than Paradisus.

Iberostar Maya, Riu Palace (either) - pricier than the Paradisus.

my profile is been to several Riu Palace, Barcelo beach, and last 4 trips always Barcelo Palace Deluxe. Travelling with 6&8 year olds

Questions.
1. If I book via orbitz using aeromexico, it has a layover in Mexico City with 1.5 hour layover. Im worried what happens if flights get delayed, cancelled, etc. what happens if your bags get lost? (I know most people will say take non stop on united from houston but for a family of four its $1200 more total which is alot) in June. Im just worried on the way there if we have any delays etc. Any feedback is greatly appreciated with people that had layovers in Mexico City. Orbitz call center really didnt have an answer in the what if scenarios.

2. Can anyone tell me regarding the food/rooms/service/premium drinks, etc comparing Paradisus vs Barcelo Palace Deluxe. My wife is vegetarian, so while I love the unlimited steaks @ barcelo i want to find something a bit different.

3. Has anyone used the private car/van service via orbitz, its cheaper than entertainment plus which i normally use? any issues

4. How far how much $ is a cab ride to Play from Paradisus.

5. Any other choices - Im basing my decision on pricing, reviews.

6. is a swim out room worth the upgrade on the junior suite or is family concierge junior suite better. I like the ability to relax on the balcony while kids are in the swimout area.

7. We did look at the Royalton - but the reviews of hand/foot disease was a bit worrysome. Also while i like the kids water park at the royalton it was more then the Paradisus for my days of travel and didnt look to have alot of shade around pools and beach.

Thank you in advance for any tips that help. Especially regarding aeromexico with stops or united non stop for $1200 difference.

Oh boy...that's alotta stuff.

First, if I may ask - what are your dates of travel?

Short answer - Paradisus is superior to all the other hotels you're considering.

I have regular Barcelo Palace clients who have stayed there numerous times and tried the Paradisus last year. I got a call not 45 minutes after they arrived, they didn't seem to like it and were asking how much it would cost to change hotels and go back to Barcelo. The cost was outrageous, considering they were already there so they stuck with Paradisus. End of the day, they ending up acclimating and enjoyed their stay. They did however, upgrade their room at check in, I believe to a swim out and they really enjoyed the upgrade.

Everyone else I've ever booked at the Paradisus has been very happy. Always positive comments on the quality of the food, drinks and service. Side note, I get the same comments from everyone I book at the Royalton too.

I am not a fan of the Occidental, I don't sell it anymore actually.

The IB* Maya is fine, but I wouldn't pay more for it than Paradisus. It's similar to Barcelo in the respect that it's a huge resort complex with multiple sections, with the Maya being the top section. But it shares a pool with the Lindo so that crowds things up a bit. And the pool is set back from the beach so no view or breeze like Barcelo.

Riu is Riu - if you've been to one, you know what you're getting there. Barcelo is better quality as is IB* and Paradisus.

As far as upgrading at the Paradisus, I'd say this is a plus. Family concierge has some nice perks, but swim out can also be nice so that you have pool access from your room.

I personally would not recommend a flight with a layover when coming from Houston. I do understand the price difference though, but you're making a quick 2+ hour flight into a longer journey with layovers, and with young kids. And if there is a delay on a segment, sure, you can miss your connection. This can and certainly does happen. I would also never recommend booking with Orbitz. Your phone call asking questions that didn't get a helpful response is just one reason. Did you know that a travel agent can match your Orbitz price?

I wouldn't use their transfer service either. Why, when you have a service that has worked well for you in the past?

There is a difference between price and value. Value is what you get; price is what you pay. The internet has no soul. The internet does not care about your interests, your objectives, your desires, your safety or well being. Price only determines destination or product. You think you know where you want to go based on some ad or pop up on your screen. But in reality, what you think you want may not be the best fit for you or your family.

Forget Orbitz.
Use an agent.

Just my two cents and it is by no means an advertisement, But I just booked my trip in June with Shammy. Its a whole lot easier and it gives you an extra piece of mind. Plus she saved me A LOT of money. Same exact trip I was going to book on orbitz/Travelocity and she saved me almost a grand. I may be a little biased, but there's my .02.

Going there a third time with family (boys 7 and 10) soon, and can hardly wait. Been to at least a dozen resorts in the area, and this one tops them all.

Hey Shammy
can you tell me why you aren't a fan of the Occidental (assuming you mean the grand Xcaret)? We are considering it for a Labor Day trip, and don't need a great beach. The price is right but we aren't familiar with it so would appreciate your help.

Our usual go-to is RPRM if that helps.

One of Mr. Bean's concerns is too many kids since it's so close to Xcaret. is that part of your issue or is it something else?

It's a hard sell for my clients mainly because of the beach, or lack thereof. Most people traveling to this area want a real beach, ocean, waves, etc. I also think there are better quality properties for the money and if a client is interested, I always suggest upgrading to a Royal Club room, which tends to make the overal hotel experience better. Nothing to do with there being kids there, it's a family friendly resort so that is to be expected. The hotel can work for one and not for another, really just depends on expectations and personal experience I suppose.

Thank you! He can't get over not having the beach, so we decided tonight that we are sticking with Playacar. This time, Quetzal, so we still get the jungle environment with the amenities and location Playacar offers.
As always, we appreciate your help.
